Una de las obras más famosas es El Cantar de Mio Cid, que data del siglo XII. Este poema épico narra las aventuras de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, conocido como El Cid. La historia cuenta sus batallas y su vida como héroe nacional. Es considerado el primer gran obra de la literatura española.
En el siglo XIII, el rey Alfonso X el Sabio promovió la creación de muchas obras literarias. Él fundó la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo, donde se tradujeron textos del árabe y del latín al castellano. También escribió obras sobre historia, derecho y astronomía, contribuyendo al desarrollo de la lengua española.
La poesía jugó un papel importante en la literatura medieval. Los trovadores eran poetas que componían canciones sobre el amor cortés. Estas canciones se cantaban en las cortes de los reyes y nobles. El amor romántico y la admiración hacia las damas eran temas frecuentes en sus poemas.
Don Juan Manuel fue otro autor importante del siglo XIV. Escribió El Conde Lucanor, una colección de cuentos con moralejas. Cada cuento enseña una lección sobre la vida y la conducta humana. Esta obra es considerada una de las primeras piezas de prosa narrativa en español.

La literatura del siglo XV vio el surgimiento de la novela sentimental. Estas obras exploraban los sentimientos y emociones de los personajes. La Celestina, escrita al final del periodo medieval, es una obra que marca la transición hacia el Renacimiento. Es una tragedia sobre el amor y la pasión.
