Spanish books for A2

At A2 you already read in the past tenses and know the most common words. The classics offer almost no complete texts at this level, so most of this shelf is MovaReader adaptations: fairy tales, stories from the Arabian Nights, classic novels and Spanish classics such as the Cantar de mio Cid and Bécquer’s legends, retold in simple Spanish. The one complete text is Ellen M. Cyr’s Libro segundo de lectura, a real school reader from the 1910s.

The catalog measures two things: the average sentence length and the share of long words, 9 letters or more. At A2 sentences average 8-10 words, at A1 5-7. A long word comes from once in 90 words in Aladdin to once in 28 in Cinderella. The story is told in the pretérito indefinido and imperfecto: that is the main line between A2 and A1, where everything is in the present tense. In every book the difficulty is even from the first chapter to the last.

Before you read

Are these the original texts?

Mostly no. Twenty-two are MovaReader adaptations: fairy tales, stories from the Arabian Nights, classic novels and Spanish classics such as the Cantar de mio Cid and Bécquer’s legends, retold in simple Spanish for A2, each following a public-domain source, from the anonymous Lazarillo of 1554 to Carroll’s Alice of 1865 and Collodi’s Pinocchio of 1883. The twenty-third, Ellen M. Cyr’s Libro segundo de lectura, is a complete original: the Spanish half of a bilingual school reader from the 1910s. The complete Don Quixote is in the catalog too, at C2.

How is A2 different from A1 in this catalog?

In tense and sentence length. The A1 tales are told in the present tense, with 5-7 words per sentence; at A2 the story is told in the past tenses, with 8-10 words per sentence on average.

How long does a book take?

From one hour to three: the books on the shelf run from 3,400 to 9,000 words. The shortest is Hansel and Gretel, the longest Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

What should I read after A2?

The B1 shelf: eleven classics, from La Celestina to The Hound of the Baskervilles, retold in Spanish in all the tenses, 11-12 words per sentence. Among the complete texts above this shelf, the simplest are Unamuno’s at B2, such as Mist, with 13 words per sentence, running on conversations and monologues.
