Durante muchos años, los reinos cristianos en el norte de la península lucharon contra los reinos musulmanes en el sur. La batalla de Covadonga en el año 718 fue el primer enfrentamiento importante. Los cristianos ganaron esta pequeña batalla y esto les dio esperanza para continuar su lucha.
El avance de la Reconquista fue lento pero constante. Los reinos de León, Castilla, Aragón y Navarra fueron ganando territorio poco a poco. Cada reino tenía su propio rey y sus propias leyes, pero todos compartían el objetivo de recuperar las tierras ocupadas.
En el año 1085, Alfonso VI de Castilla conquistó la ciudad de Toledo. Esta fue una victoria muy importante porque Toledo era un centro cultural y político. Después de esta conquista, muchos cristianos, musulmanes y judíos vivieron juntos en la ciudad y compartieron sus conocimientos.
La creación del Reino de Castilla fue otro momento clave. Los reyes castellanos expandieron sus territorios hacia el sur. La unión de Castilla y Aragón mediante el matrimonio de Isabel y Fernando en 1469 aceleró el proceso de la Reconquista.
La toma de Granada en 1492 fue el último acto de la Reconquista. Los Reyes Católicos, Isabel y Fernando, conquistaron el último reino musulmán en la península. El rey Boabdil entregó las llaves de la Alhambra y así terminó este periodo histórico.
Durante la Reconquista se desarrolló una cultura única. Los cristianos, musulmanes y judíos convivieron en algunas ciudades y compartieron sus conocimientos en medicina, matemáticas, filosofía y arte. Esta mezcla de culturas enriqueció la historia de España.
Las ciudades fronterizas eran lugares especialmente activos. Allí se construían castillos y fortalezas para defender los territorios. Muchas de estas ciudades crecieron y se convirtieron en importantes centros urbanos.
La Reconquista también influyó en el idioma español. El castellano evolucionó durante este tiempo y se convirtió en la lengua principal del reino. Muchas palabras del árabe entraron en el vocabulario español.
Hoy en día, la Reconquista es un tema importante en la historia de España. Los historiadores estudian este periodo para entender cómo se formó el país y cómo influyó en la cultura española actual. Los monumentos de aquella época, como castillos y iglesias, siguen en pie y nos recuerdan este pasado glorioso.
