La Catedral de Santa María de Toledo es uno de los mejores ejemplos de la arquitectura gótica en España. Esta catedral fue construida en el siglo XIII sobre una mezquita árabe. La Catedral de Burgos es otra catedral gótica muy famosa. Fue construida en el siglo XIII y es Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Esta catedral es conocida por su fachada muy decorada con esculturas y relieves. La catedral tiene dos torres muy altas que se pueden ver desde lejos. El interior tiene un claustro gótico muy hermoso con arquerías y jardines. La catedral también tiene la tumba de El Cid, un héroe español muy famoso.
La Catedral de León es otro ejemplo impresionante del gótico español. Esta catedral es conocida como la casa de la luz porque tiene más de 1,800 metros cuadrados de vidrieras. Las vidrieras son muy antiguas y representan escenas bíblicas y santos. Cuando el sol entra por las vidrieras, el interior de la catedral se ilumina con colores brillantes. Es una experiencia muy impresionante ver la luz atravesando los cristales de colores.
El Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas en Burgos es un ejemplo de arquitectura gótica cisterciense. Este monasterio fue fundado en el siglo XII y fue muy importante para la realeza española. El monasterio tiene una iglesia gótica muy sencilla y elegante. Los monjes cistercienses preferían un estilo más simple y menos decorado que otras órdenes religiosas. El monasterio también tiene un claustro muy tranquilo con jardines y fuentes.
La arquitectura gótica en España tiene características especiales que la diferencian del gótico de otros países europeos. Por ejemplo, muchas iglesias góticas españolas tienen elementos de la arquitectura árabe como arcos decorados y patios interiores. Esto es porque España estuvo bajo dominio árabe durante muchos siglos y los arquitectos españoles combinaron estilos europeos y árabes. Esta mezcla de estilos crea una arquitectura muy única y original.
Los arquitectos góticos españoles también fueron muy innovadores en el uso de la luz. Crearon edificios con ventanales muy grandes para dejar entrar la mayor cantidad de luz posible. Las vidrieras de colores no solo decoraban las iglesias, sino que también contaban historias bíblicas para las personas que no sabían leer. De esta forma, las iglesias eran lugares de enseñanza tanto espiritual como cultural.
La construcción de los edificios góticos tardaba muchos años, a veces siglos.
