Una semana antes, un borrador proponía un sistema con doce planetas. Plutón mantenía su categoría y Ceres, Caronte y el objeto llamado entonces 2003 UB313 entraban en la lista. No obstante, aquel texto era una propuesta y no el resultado final.
La resolución aprobada estableció tres condiciones. Un planeta debe estar en órbita en torno al Sol. Asimismo, debe tener suficiente masa para adoptar una forma casi redonda por su propia gravedad. Además, debe haber limpiado la vecindad de su órbita.
Plutón cumple las dos primeras condiciones. En cambio, no cumple la tercera según la definición de la IAU. Por consiguiente, el Sistema Solar quedó con ocho planetas: desde Mercurio hasta Neptuno.
La nueva categoría de planeta enano también exige una órbita en torno al Sol y una forma casi redonda. Sin embargo, el objeto no ha limpiado la vecindad orbital y no puede ser un satélite. De hecho, la resolución incluyó a Ceres, Plutón y 2003 UB313 entre los primeros miembros de esta categoría.
La votación muestra que no hubo unanimidad sobre todos los detalles. La definición principal fue aprobada por una gran mayoría. Por otra parte, la resolución sobre la clase de Plutón recibió 237 votos a favor, 157 en contra y 17 abstenciones. Aun así, fue aprobada.
Plutón no cambió de tamaño ni de órbita aquel día. En cambio, cambió el criterio usado para clasificarlo. Esta diferencia importa: una clasificación científica organiza observaciones mediante reglas, pero no transforma físicamente el objeto.
La IAU indica que la definición no ha cambiado desde 2006. Por consiguiente, Plutón sigue siendo un planeta enano en su sistema oficial, aunque el debate cultural y científico continúe.
