El 24 de agosto de 2006, la Unión Astronómica Internacional aprobó en su Asamblea General de Praga una resolución sobre los cuerpos del Sistema Solar. Lo que aprobó la asamblea fue una definición de tres categorías: planetas, planetas enanos y cuerpos pequeños del Sistema Solar. Fue aquella votación la que cambió el vocabulario oficial sobre Plutón.

Para que un cuerpo sea planeta según esa resolución, debe orbitar alrededor del Sol, tener masa suficiente para adoptar una forma casi redonda y haber despejado la vecindad de su órbita. Que la resolución fuera breve no significa que fuera simple: cada requisito delimita la categoría.

La misma resolución define un planeta enano mediante cuatro condiciones. Ha de orbitar el Sol, ser casi redondo por efecto de su propia gravedad, no haber despejado la vecindad de su órbita y no ser un satélite. Un planeta cumple los tres criterios de su categoría; un planeta enano, los cuatro de la suya.

Plutón encaja en la segunda definición. Cumple los dos primeros requisitos de un planeta, pero el tercero, no. De ahí que Plutón figure desde entonces como planeta enano y que el Sistema Solar tenga ocho planetas conforme a la resolución.

La Resolución 6A añadió otra precisión: reconoció a Plutón como prototipo de una nueva categoría de objetos transneptunianos. No cabe afirmar que la decisión se limitara a quitar una etiqueta; también situó a Plutón dentro de un grupo definido de otra manera.

La sonda New Horizons había despegado el 19 de enero de 2006, antes de aquella votación. El 14 de julio de 2015 se convirtió en la primera nave que exploró Plutón de cerca. Puede que la clasificación hubiera cambiado, pero el destino científico de la misión no.

Los datos de New Horizons mostraron un mundo complejo con montañas, valles, llanuras, cráteres y glaciares. Fue la observación cercana la que permitió describir esos paisajes con un detalle antes imposible. No cabe afirmar que el sobrevuelo devolviera a Plutón la categoría de planeta: la exploración y la nomenclatura responden a preguntas distintas.
