About this article

Level A2 Reading focus

What you'll learn

Past tense with gender endings (-в, -ла, -ли), the dative of feeling (мені жаль, мені легше), superlatives with най-, conditional with би and якби, clauses with бо, що and щоб, vocabulary of village life, farm work, family, illness and emigration (поле, горб, хата, лікар, Канада)

This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of five short stories by Vasyl Stefanyk (1897-1900): Камінний хрест (The Stone Cross), Синя книжечка, Діти, Катруся and Новина, retold in simple modern Ukrainian without the Pokuttia dialect of the originals. Level A2 suits readers who know the basics: sentences of about 9 words, past-tense narration and many short speeches. The stories are sober and meant for adults: emigration to Canada, poverty, illness and old age in a Galician village. You will learn words for farm work, family and village life, and past-tense verb endings.
