MovaReader's Free Plan: What You Can Actually Do Every Day

Most reading apps hand you a free tier that is really a shop window. Three articles, a blurred fourth, and a button that wants your card.

MovaReader's free plan works differently, and it is worth knowing exactly how before you decide whether to pay anything. The whole library is open. You can mark words, keep a vocabulary list, and practise listening for as long as you like. What you get on a budget is the thing that costs money to run: single-word translations, capped at twenty a day.

Your plan card tells you where you stand

Open MovaReader while signed in and the first thing on your dashboard is a plan card. It is not a marketing panel. It reads your real usage and shows what is left today.

Every row is a live number. Twenty word translations with the remaining count beside it, the two trainer runs, the listening trainer marked with an infinity sign, and the one URL import. Underneath sits the exact moment your limits come back.

That last detail matters more than it sounds. The reset is 00:00 UTC, not midnight where you live. If you read in the evening in Mexico City, your day flips over in the middle of your session.

The library is not the limited part

This is the part people get wrong. The daily caps are on translation and trainers, never on reading.

Thousands of graded texts, filtered by CEFR level from A1 to C2, plus books, phrase sets and the grammar tree. Free accounts open all of it. Nothing is greyed out, nothing asks you to upgrade before the third paragraph.

So if your plan is "read a short Spanish article every morning", the free plan already does that, forever.

Reading with your own colours

Open any text and the words carry your history. Green means you have marked it as known. Amber means you are learning it. Blue means you have not touched it yet.

Free accounts really do get this. Marking words is not a paid feature, and the words you save stay yours.

The translation card, and the counter on it

Tap a word and the card opens. You get the word, audio, the translation, and two buttons: I know and Learn.

Notice the blue strip. "Translations left today: 16 of 20." The count is right there in the card, so you never have to guess how much of your budget is gone. The same number sits in the corner of the sidebar next to your account.

Twenty is enough for a short article if you are reading at roughly the right level. It runs out fast if you picked something two levels too hard, which is a useful signal in itself.

What happens at twenty

Nothing breaks. The card changes.

You get a plain explanation: the limit is spent, it resets at 00:00 UTC, and unlimited translations start at one euro a month. You can keep reading the article. You just cannot look up a twenty-first new word until tomorrow.

The one thing the free card does not do

Sentence translation is not part of the free plan. Tap the small icon at the end of a sentence and you get this instead.

Word by word, yes, up to twenty. Whole sentences, no. That is the honest line between free and one euro.

The expanded Meaning section of the translation card, the one with usage notes rather than just the gloss, is also part of the paid card.

Trainers: one run each, and one that never runs out

The trainers page shows the shape of the free plan clearly.

Word typing gets one session a day. Phrase typing gets one session a day. The phrase listening trainer has no daily limit, so you can drill comprehension as long as your ears hold out.

That is a deliberate choice, not an oversight. Listening costs us almost nothing to serve, so it stays open.

One article from the web, every day

Free accounts can bring in outside reading.

Paste a URL, MovaReader parses the article, and it lands in your files as a readable text with tappable words. One a day. If the parse fails, your allowance is not spent, which is fair given how many pages resist being read.

Adding your own typed or pasted text is a Pro feature, and so is unlimited URL importing.

Your words stay yours

Everything you mark goes into My Words, split into learning and learned.

This is worth saying plainly because a lot of free tiers rent you your own data. Your list is not wiped when a day rolls over. The daily caps limit how fast you can add to it, not whether you keep it.

Where free sits next to paid

The pricing page shows the free plan as a real plan with its own card, not an absence of one.

Reader costs one euro a month and buys exactly one thing: the translation ceiling goes away. Pro costs five and opens the trainers and imports.

Read-aloud practice is also unlimited on the free plan, though your practice history is only saved from Pro upward.

Who the free plan is genuinely enough for

If you read one short text a day at a level you can mostly handle, twenty lookups will cover it. If you mainly want listening practice, nothing stops you. If you are still deciding whether reading is your method at all, spend a month here before spending anything.

You will feel the ceiling if you read long texts, read above your level on purpose, or lean on sentence translation to get through a paragraph. Those are the habits that make one euro worth it.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a card to start? No. The free plan has no payment step. Create an account and the limits above apply immediately.

Does the counter reset at my midnight? No, at 00:00 UTC. Check the reset time on your plan card if you are unsure how that maps to your evening.

If I look up the same word twice, does it cost two? No. The same word on the same day counts once.

Do I lose my saved words if I stay free? No. My Words is yours regardless of plan.

Is the free library smaller than the paid one? No. Same library, same levels, same books.
