At its core, a blockchain is a digital ledger that records transactions. Think of it like a shared notebook that everyone can read but no one can erase or change. Each transaction is recorded in a block, and these blocks are linked together in a chain. Once a block is added to the chain, it cannot be altered. This makes the record permanent and tamper-proof. Many computers around the world maintain copies of the blockchain, which makes it very difficult to hack or manipulate.
The technology uses cryptography to secure the data. Each block contains a unique code called a hash, which is like a digital fingerprint. The hash is created based on the information in the block. If anyone tries to change the data in a block, the hash will no longer match, and the network will reject the change. Each block also contains the hash of the previous block, which links them together. This linking is what creates the chain and makes the system secure.
One of the key features of blockchain is decentralization. Traditional systems like banks or government databases are centralized, meaning they are controlled by a single organization. In contrast, blockchain is distributed across many computers. No single entity controls the network. This decentralization makes the system more resistant to censorship and corruption. It also reduces the risk of a single point of failure, as the network can continue operating even if some computers go offline.
Blockchain technology enables smart contracts. These are self-executing contracts with the terms written directly into code. When certain conditions are met, the contract automatically executes without needing a middleman. For example, an insurance claim could be paid automatically when flight data shows a delay. Smart contracts can make many processes faster, cheaper, and more reliable. They are being used in finance, real estate, and other industries.
The most well-known application of blockchain is cryptocurrency. Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, launched in 2009. It uses blockchain to record transactions without needing a bank. People can send Bitcoin directly to each other anywhere in the world. The transactions are verified by network participants called miners, who use powerful computers to solve complex mathematical problems. In return for their work, miners receive new Bitcoin as a reward. This process is called mining and is how new Bitcoin enters circulation.
Beyond cryptocurrencies, blockchain has many other potential uses. Supply chain management is one promising application. Companies can use blockchain to track products from manufacture to delivery.
