Temperature is one important part of weather. It measures how hot or cold the air is. Temperature changes throughout the day. Usually, the hottest time is in the afternoon around 2 or 3 pm. The coldest time is often just before sunrise. Temperature also changes with seasons. Summer is hot and winter is cold in many places.
Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. When humidity is high, the air feels wet and sticky. High humidity makes hot days feel even hotter. When humidity is low, the air feels dry. Dry air can make skin feel rough and cause static electricity. Humidity affects how comfortable we feel outside.
Wind is moving air. Wind happens when air moves from high pressure to low pressure areas. We can measure wind speed and direction. A gentle wind is called a breeze. Strong winds can be dangerous during storms. Wind helps spread seeds from plants and brings cool air on hot days. Wind turbines use wind energy to make electricity.
Clouds are made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals. They form when warm air rises and cools down. Different types of clouds bring different weather. White fluffy clouds usually mean fair weather. Dark gray clouds often bring rain or snow. Clouds also affect temperature by blocking sunlight during the day and keeping heat in at night.
Rain is water that falls from clouds. It happens when water droplets in clouds become too heavy and fall. Rain is important for plants and animals. It fills rivers and lakes. Too much rain can cause floods. Too little rain causes droughts. Farmers need the right amount of rain for their crops to grow well.
Snow is frozen water that falls from clouds when the air is very cold. Snow covers the ground in white during winter. Many plants need cold weather and snow to rest before spring. Snow melts in spring and provides water for plants. Some animals change their fur color to white in winter to hide in the snow.
Thunderstorms happen when warm air rises quickly in the atmosphere. They bring lightning and thunder. Lightning is a flash of electricity in the sky. Thunder is the sound that lightning makes. Thunderstorms can be dangerous. People should stay inside during strong storms. Heavy rain and strong winds often come with thunderstorms.
Weather forecasts predict what the weather will be like. Meteorologists are scientists who study weather. They use satellites, radar, and weather stations to collect data. Weather forecasts help people decide what to wear and whether to carry an umbrella. They also help farmers plan their work and pilots plan flights.
Climate zones are large areas with similar weather patterns. The equator region is hot all year.
