An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their environment. This includes plants, animals, microorganisms, and the physical surroundings such as soil, water, and air. Ecosystems can be as small as a pond or as large as a rainforest. Each ecosystem has specific characteristics that determine which species can survive there. The interactions between organisms and their environment create complex webs of relationships.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth. It includes genetic diversity within species, species diversity within ecosystems, and ecosystem diversity across landscapes. High biodiversity makes ecosystems more resilient to changes and disturbances. When biodiversity decreases, ecosystems become more vulnerable to collapse. Protecting biodiversity is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and the services they provide.

Food chains and food webs describe how energy moves through ecosystems. A food chain shows a single path of energy from producers to consumers. Producers are usually plants that make food through photosynthesis. Consumers are animals that eat other organisms. Decomposers break down dead organisms and recycle nutrients. Food webs are more complex than food chains because most organisms eat multiple things and are eaten by multiple predators.

Producers form the base of most ecosystems. These organisms, primarily plants and algae, convert sunlight into chemical energy through photosynthesis. This energy then flows through the ecosystem as consumers eat producers and each other. Without producers, ecosystems would collapse because they provide the energy that supports all other life. Different ecosystems have different types of producers adapted to local conditions.

Primary consumers are herbivores that eat producers. Examples include rabbits, deer, and many insects. Secondary consumers are carnivores that eat herbivores. Tertiary consumers are predators that eat other carnivores. Some organisms are omnivores that eat both plants and animals. This classification helps understand how energy moves through ecosystems and the relationships between different species.

Decomposers play a crucial role in ecosystems by breaking down dead organisms and waste. Bacteria and fungi are the main decomposers. They release nutrients back into the soil, making them available for plants to use again. Without decomposers, dead material would accumulate and nutrients would be locked away. This recycling process is essential for the continued functioning of ecosystems.

Ecosystems provide many services that benefit humans. These ecosystem services include clean air and water, fertile soil, climate regulation, and pollination of crops. Forests regulate water cycles and prevent soil erosion. Wetlands filter pollutants from water. Bees and other pollinators enable agriculture. These services have enormous economic value and are often taken for granted until they are disrupted.

Terrestrial ecosystems include forests, grasslands, deserts, and tundra. Forests are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Tropical rainforests have exceptionally high biodiversity but are threatened by deforestation. Grasslands support large herbivores and predators. Deserts have adapted organisms that can survive extreme conditions. Tundra ecosystems are found in cold regions and have simple food webs due to harsh conditions.

Aquatic ecosystems include freshwater and marine environments. Freshwater ecosystems include rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Marine ecosystems range from coastal areas to the deep ocean.
