The ancient Celts lived in Ireland and Britain about 2,000 years ago. They believed that on the night before the new year, the worlds of the living and the dead came together. They built large fires and wore costumes made of animal skins to protect themselves from ghosts. Over time, these traditions changed and became what we now call Halloween. The name comes from "All Hallows' Eve," which is the night before a religious holiday called All Saints' Day.
One of the most popular Halloween traditions is dressing up in costumes. In the past, people wore scary costumes like ghosts, witches, or skeletons. Today, costumes can be anything. You might see children dressed as superheroes, animals, or even pieces of fruit. People often have costume parties where there are prizes for the most creative or the scariest outfit.
Another famous tradition is trick-or-treating. Children dress up and go from house to house in their neighborhood. When they knock on a door, they say, "Trick or treat!" This means they want a "treat," which is usually some candy or chocolate. If the person in the house does not give them anything, they might play a "trick," like hiding something in the garden. Today, most people are prepared and have lots of sweets ready for the children.
Many people also like to decorate their homes for Halloween. Common decorations include spider webs, plastic bats, and skeletons. One very special decoration is the jack-o'-lantern. This is a large orange pumpkin with a face cut into it. People put a candle inside so the face glows in the dark. Designing and carving a pumpkin is a fun activity for families to do together.
Carving pumpkins actually started with turnips in Ireland. According to an old story, a man named Jack tried to trick the devil. When he died, he could not go to heaven or hell. He had to walk the earth forever with only a small light inside a turnip. When Irish people moved to America, they found that pumpkins were much easier to carve than turnips. That is why we use pumpkins today.
Halloween is also a time for special food and games. Many people eat candy apples, which are apples covered in hard red sugar. Another traditional game is "apple bobbing." A large bowl is filled with water and several apples. Players must try to catch an apple with only their teeth. It is a very difficult and messy game, but it is always very funny to watch.
In some countries, Halloween is becoming more popular every year. For example, in Mexico, they have a holiday called the Day of the Dead around the same time.
