Many years ago, people knew about lightning. Lightning is in the sky during a storm. It is very bright and very loud. It is electricity. Ancient people saw lightning, but they did not know what it was. They were afraid of it. They thought it was magic or a sign from the gods. They did not understand how it worked.
About 2,600 years ago, a man in Greece named Thales found something interesting. He rubbed amber with a cloth. Amber is a hard, yellow stone. When he rubbed it, the stone could pick up small pieces of dust. This was static electricity. But Thales did not understand it yet. He just thought it was a cool thing to see. He did not know that he found the start of science.
For a long time, nothing happened. Then, in the year 1752, a man named Benjamin Franklin did a famous experiment. He was from America. He wanted to see if lightning was electricity. One stormy day, he flew a kite. He put a metal key on the kite string. When lightning hit the kite, electricity went down the string to the key. Benjamin Franklin felt a small spark. He was lucky! Lightning is very dangerous. But he proved that lightning is electricity. This was a very big step.
After that, scientists wanted to make electricity. They wanted to hold it in a box. In the year 1800, a man from Italy named Alessandro Volta made the first battery. It was a pile of metal and paper soaked in saltwater. It could make a small amount of electricity for a long time. Now, people had a way to use electricity! We call the "volt" after him because of his great work.
But people still did not have lights. They used candles and oil lamps. In 1879, Thomas Edison in America made a great invention. He made the light bulb. It could stay bright for many hours. This changed the world. Now, people could work and play at night. Edison also built the first power station. This station sent electricity to houses through wires. People were very happy.
Then there was Nikola Tesla. He was a very smart man. He worked with electricity too. He wanted to send electricity over long distances. He made a system called "Alternating Current" or AC. This system is what we use today. It is very good because it can go very far. Tesla had many big ideas. He wanted everyone in the world to have free electricity. He was a very kind man.
Later, George Westinghouse worked with Tesla. They built a big power plant at Niagara Falls. They used the water to make electricity. This was very big news. Soon, cities all over the world began to have electricity.
