| Rasgo | Formal | Informal o neutra |
|---|---|---|
| Objeto en una pregunta | Whom did you contact? | Who did you contact? |
| Preposición | the person to whom I spoke | the person I spoke to |
| Contracciones | do not, cannot, we will | don't, can't, we'll |
| Verbo | investigate, postpone, tolerate | look into, put off, put up with |
| Pasiva | My bike was stolen. | My bike got stolen. |
| Conector | Moreover, consequently | Plus, so |
| Carta o email | Dear Ms Lee ... Kind regards | Hi Tom ... Cheers |
Después de una preposición solo cabe whom: to whom, with whom. Sin preposición, Who did you contact? es una frase normal, y como sujeto se usa who en todos los registros: Who wrote the report? To whom it may concern es la fórmula fija del saludo formal.
Peticiones corteses
| Nivel | Ejemplo | Gramática |
|---|---|---|
| Directo | Send me the file. | imperativo |
| Neutro | Could you send me the file? | could + verbo base |
| Cortés | Could you possibly send me the file? | possibly + verbo base |
| Muy cortés | Would you mind sending me the file? | mind + -ing |
| Prudente | I was wondering if you could send me the file. | pasado continuo + if you could + verbo base |
| Formal | I would be grateful if you could send me the file. | grateful if you could + verbo base |
Atenuadores habituales: I'm afraid that, unfortunately, it seems that, a bit, slightly, I just wanted to check. Cierres formales: Please find attached, I look forward to hearing from you (look forward to lleva -ing), Yours sincerely; entre amigos, Thanks in advance, Best, Cheers.
Conectores según el registro
Los conectores formales moreover, furthermore, in addition, consequently, nevertheless, with regard to tienen equivalentes coloquiales: plus, also, so, though, about. Anyway, by the way, I mean y though al final de la frase (The flat is small. It is cheap, though.) pertenecen a la conversación.

Formas no estándar
| Forma no estándar | Inglés estándar |
|---|---|
| ain't | am not, is not, are not, has not, have not |
| I didn't see nobody. | I didn't see anybody. |
| Me and him went. | He and I went. |
| They was late. | They were late. |
| He don't know. | He doesn't know. |
| I seen it. | I saw it. / I have seen it. |
| them books | those books |
Con el inglés pasa lo mismo: flat y apartment, at the weekend y on the weekend. Los calcos, en cambio, sí fallan: «Quedo a la espera de su respuesta» no es I stay waiting for your answer, sino I look forward to hearing from you y «diferente de» es different from, no different of. «Le agradecería que me enviara» encaja bien con I would be grateful if you could send.

- Would you mind sending me the report? ¿Te importaría enviarme el informe?
- I was wondering if you could move the deadline. Quería preguntarte si podrías cambiar el plazo.
- I look forward to hearing from you. Quedo a la espera de tu respuesta.
- The band are ready. (British) / The band is ready. El grupo está listo.
- Prices have gotten higher since spring.

- The lift is broken, so take the stairs.
Do you have, The committee has, organize.

Preguntas frecuentes
Cambian el vocabulario (flat y apartment), la ortografía (colour y color) y algunos puntos de gramática: have got y have, gotten, el verbo con nombres colectivos, at y on the weekend.
¿Whom o who?
Después de una preposición, solo whom: to whom, with whom. Como sujeto siempre who: Who wrote it?
¿Gotten o got?
Gotten es el participio americano de get: Prices have gotten higher. En inglés británico se dice have got. Para expresar posesión, las dos variedades usan have got: I've got a car.
¿Have got o have?
Have you got a car? es típico del inglés británico y Do you have a car? del americano, aunque la segunda también es habitual en Gran Bretaña. Por eso Do you have vale en todas partes.
Empieza con Dear Ms Lee o Dear Sir or Madam, evita las contracciones, elige verbos como request e investigate, suaviza las peticiones (I would be grateful if you could ...) y cierra con Yours sincerely o Kind regards. Antes del cierre encaja bien I look forward to hearing from you.
