Planning outdoor activities in northern England requires a healthy degree of scepticism regarding long - range meteorological forecasts . Weather patterns across Yorkshire change with remarkable speed , and an optimistic sunny morning can rapidly give way to dense hill fog by early afternoon . As my friends and I planned an ambitious cycling excursion for this weekend , we consulted three competing meteorological websites to see which predictions we might trust . The national weather service predicted that a brisk Atlantic cold front could arrive on Friday evening , bringing scattered drizzle and blustery winds . According to their senior meteorologists , Saturday morning might offer a brief four - hour window of dry weather before dark storm clouds roll in from the west . However , they warned that wind gusts along coastal clifftops could reach forty miles per hour , making high cycling trails uncomfortable . Meanwhile , an independent regional forecasting application presented a slightly more encouraging perspective for Sunday . Their computer models suggest that temperatures may rise to sixteen degrees Celsius under gentle southerly breezes . If high atmospheric pressure builds over the Pennines , rainfall might bypass our river valley entirely , creating ideal conditions for cycling along sheltered country lanes . Because these varying forecasts could prove inaccurate , our cycling club decided to adopt a flexible strategy . We agreed to prepare waterproof pannier bags , pack thermal jackets , and select an inland valley route that offers train stations every ten miles . If torrential rain develops unexpectedly , we can easily shorten our ride and catch an afternoon train home . When mountain weather is unpredictable , taking sensible precautions ensures that outdoor excursions remain enjoyable . Interpreting weather forecasts helps travellers make sensible decisions before setting out into the countryside . Do you trust mobile weather applications when you plan outdoor activities on weekends ? What alternative plans might you arrange if unexpected rainfall disrupts your outdoor excursions ?
