“ Lift me up , ” he says . “ I want to sit next to you . ” The princess does not move . She looks at her plate . She waits and waits . Maybe he will go away ? But the frog does not go away . He sits there and waits too . “ Lift him up , ” says the king . “ Do it now . ” So the princess lifts the frog up . He is cold and wet in her hands . She puts him on the chair next to her . But when the frog is on the chair , he wants more . “ Now put me on the table , ” he says . The princess puts him on the table . He sits next to her little golden plate . “ Now push your little golden plate closer to me , ” he says . “ Then we can eat together . ” The princess pushes the plate to him . She does it , but she does not do it happily . Everybody can see that . The frog eats from her little golden plate . He likes the food very much . “ Mm , this is good , ” he says . “ Thank you , Princess . ” But the princess cannot eat . She takes some food , but it does not go down . It sticks in her throat . She puts down her spoon . She does not want to eat from the same plate as a frog . The king says nothing . He watches them both . At last the frog stops eating . “ I am full now , ” he says . “ That was a very good dinner . ” VII . The Little Silk Bed The frog sits on the table and looks at the princess . “ Now I am tired , ” he says . “ Carry me to your little room . Make your little silk bed ready . Then we can both lie down and go to sleep . ” The princess begins to cry . She is afraid of the cold frog . She does not want to touch him again . And now he wants to sleep in her pretty little bed ! Her bed is so soft and so clean . And the frog is so wet and so cold . “ Oh , Father , please , ” she says . “ Not in my bed ! ” But now the king is angry . “ This frog helped you when you needed help , ” he says . “ You must not turn away from him now . ” The princess can see that her father is angry . So she stops crying . She takes the frog with two fingers . She holds him far away from her . She carries him out of the room and up the stairs . In her room , she puts the frog down in a corner . Then she gets into her bed , and she pulls the covers up high . The room is dark and quiet . The princess lies in her bed . She does not sleep . She listens . Then she hears a sound . Hop , hop , hop . The frog is coming out of his corner . He comes across the floor , closer and closer , to her bed . Then he stops next to it . “ I am tired , ” he says . “ I want to sleep too , the same as you . Lift me up into your bed . If you do not lift me up , I will tell your father . ” Now the princess is very , very angry . She jumps up . She takes the frog in her hand . And she throws him against the wall as hard as she can . “ There ! ” she says . “ Now you will be quiet , you horrible frog ! ”
