I . The Miller’s Big Words In a small village there is an old mill . A mill is a building where people make flour from corn . A poor miller works there . He does not have much money . His clothes are old , and his house is small . But the miller has a daughter , and she is very pretty . She has kind eyes and long hair . She helps her father in the mill every day . One day the miller has to go to the palace . He has to speak to the king . He puts on his best coat , but it is still an old coat . He walks up to the big palace , and he feels very small . The king sits on a high chair . He has a golden crown on his head . Rich lords and ladies stand round him . They all look at the poor miller . “ What a poor little man , ” they think . The miller wants to look important . He wants the king to think well of him . So he says something very silly . “ Your Majesty , I have a daughter . She is very clever . She can spin straw into gold . ” The room is quiet . The king looks at the miller , and his eyes are bright . “ Straw into gold ? ” says the king . “ Now , that is a skill I like very much ! ” The king loves gold . He has a lot of gold , but he always wants more . “ If your daughter is as clever as you say , ” says the king , “ bring her to my palace tomorrow . I want to see what she can do . ” “ Yes , Your Majesty , ” says the miller , and he bows low . He walks home slowly . On the road he stops and thinks . “ What did I say ? ” he thinks . “ Straw into gold ! Nobody can do that . Why did I say it ? ” But it is too late now . A king does not forget words like that . At home , his daughter has bread and soup on the table for him . “ Father , you are back ! ” she says . “ How was the king ? ” The miller sits down . He does not eat his soup . “ My child , ” he says , “ I did a silly thing today . I told the king that you can spin straw into gold . ” His daughter puts down her spoon . “ Straw into gold ? But Father , I can’t do that ! Nobody can do that ! ” “ I know , ” says the miller . “ I only wanted to look important . And now the king wants to see you . Tomorrow you must go to the palace . ” The girl looks at her father . She is afraid . But she does not shout at him . He is her father , and she loves him . “ Well , ” she says quietly , “ then I must go . ” That night she cannot sleep . She looks out of the window at the moon . She thinks about the king , and she thinks about the straw .
