I . Tom and Aunt Polly “ Tom ! ” No answer . “ Tom ! Where are you , you bad boy ? ” Aunt Polly looked round the room over the top of her glasses . She was a kind old lady , and her glasses were her pride . She wore them because they looked fine , but she could see much better without them . She searched under the bed and found only the cat . Behind her there was a small sound . She turned just in time to catch a boy by his jacket . He was coming out of the little room where she kept the jam . “ There you are ! Look at your hands and your mouth . That’s jam ! I’ve told you forty times to leave that jam alone . Give me that stick . ” She lifted the stick high in the air . “ Aunt Polly ! Look behind you ! ” The old lady turned round quickly . In a second the boy was over the high garden fence , and then he was gone . Aunt Polly began to laugh quietly . “ That boy ! ” she said . “ He plays the same tricks on me again and again , and I always believe him . But he’s my poor dead sister’s child , and I haven’t got the heart to hit him hard . He’ll miss school this afternoon , I’m sure of it . So tomorrow he’ll have to work . He hates work on Saturdays more than anything . But if I don’t make him work , I’ll ruin the child . ” Tom Sawyer lived with his Aunt Polly in St Petersburg , a small town on the great Mississippi River . His half - brother Sid and his cousin Mary lived there too . Sid was a quiet boy who never did anything wrong , and he loved to tell stories about Tom . Tom did miss school that afternoon . He went swimming in the river with his friends instead , and he came home just in time for supper . At the table Aunt Polly asked him a lot of clever questions , because she wanted to catch him . “ Tom , it was very hot in school today , wasn’t it ? Didn’t you want to go swimming ? ” “ No , ma’am . Well , not very much . ” The old lady put out her hand and touched his head . His hair was a little wet . “ Some of us put our heads under the water pump , ” said Tom quickly . “ It was so hot . ” Aunt Polly had another idea . “ But you didn’t have to open your shirt collar for that , did you ? This morning I sewed it shut with a needle and thread . Open your jacket . ” Tom opened his jacket . His collar was still sewn up . “ Well , well , ” she said . “ I was sure that you went swimming . But I forgive you , Tom . You’re a better boy than you look , this time . ” Then Sid spoke . “ But Aunt Polly , didn’t you sew his collar with white thread ? It’s black now . ” “ Why , I did sew it with white thread ! Tom ! ” But Tom was already at the door . “ Siddy , I’ll pay you back for that ! ” he shouted , and he ran out .
