Muff Potter was free . Tom was a hero once again , and the newspaper wrote about him . Some people even said that he might be President one day , if he wasn’t hanged first . Tom’s days were full of glory , but his nights were full of fear . Joe was in every dream . Huck was frightened too . Tom had told the whole story to Potter’s lawyer the night before the trial , and the lawyer promised to keep Huck’s name secret . But Huck was still afraid . People offered a reward for Joe , and they searched all the country round . But nobody found him . XI . The Haunted House In every boy’s life there comes a time when he wants to dig for hidden treasure . That time came to Tom one summer day . He found Huck Finn , and Huck was always ready for anything . “ Where shall we dig ? ” asked Huck . “ Oh , almost anywhere . Robbers bury treasure under dead trees , or on islands , or under the floors of haunted houses . ” They took a pick and a shovel and dug under an old dead tree on the hill for hours . They found nothing . “ Huck , ” said Tom at last , “ there’s an old haunted house near the stream on the other side of the hill . Let’s try there . ” Huck did not like ghosts , but treasure was treasure . Friday was an unlucky day , so they waited , and on Saturday they went to the haunted house at noon . It was an empty old building with no glass in the windows and no door . The boys put their tools in a corner and went upstairs to explore . Suddenly Tom stopped . “ Sh ! Somebody’s coming ! Lie down , Huck ! ” They lay on the floor and looked down through holes in the old boards . Two men came in below . One of them was an old Spaniard who had come to town a few times lately . People said he could not hear or speak . He had a long white beard and wore green glasses . The other man was dirty and poor , and the boys did not know him . The two men sat down on the floor and began to talk . The ragged man said that a certain job was too dangerous . “ Dangerous ! ” said the Spaniard in a low voice . “ You’re a coward ! ” The boys went cold with fear . They knew that voice . It was Joe ! The men talked about one more job in the town , a job of revenge . After that they were going to leave for Texas . Then they both fell asleep . Tom and Huck tried to creep away , but the old floor made a loud noise . So they lay still again , almost dead with fear . At last the men woke up . They had a bag of silver money with them , six hundred and fifty dollars . They decided to bury it in the house until they came back . Joe began to dig in the earth floor with his knife . Soon his knife hit something hard . “ Here’s a box ! Help me get it out . ” They broke the box open , and it was full of gold coins ! There were thousands of dollars there .
