“ Some old robbers hid this here years ago , ” said Joe . “ Now it’s ours ! ” The boys upstairs were wild with excitement . “ There’s an old pick in that corner , ” said Joe’s friend . Joe looked at the pick closely . “ There’s fresh earth on it , ” he said . “ Who brought it here ? Maybe they’re upstairs ! ” The boys stopped breathing . Joe took out his knife and began to climb the stairs . But then there was a crash . The rotten old stairs broke under him , and he fell to the ground with the pieces . “ Forget it , ” said his friend . “ If anybody’s up there , let them stay there . It’s getting dark . Let’s go . ” They did not want to leave the gold in the house now . Joe said that they would take it to “ Number Two , under the cross ” . Then they went out into the evening , carrying the box . Tom and Huck climbed down slowly . They were angry with themselves . Joe took the gold away only because he saw their tools . “ Huck , ” said Tom , “ Joe talked about revenge . Do you think he meant us ? ” Huck turned pale . “ Oh , don’t , Tom ! ” XII . The Picnic For days Tom and Huck thought only about “ Number Two ” . At last Tom had an idea . “ Huck , it could be the number of a room in a tavern ! ” There was a room number two in the small tavern in the village . The owner’s son told Tom that it was always locked . Sometimes there was a light in its window at night . One very dark night Tom crept to the door of the room with a bunch of old keys , and Huck waited outside . Suddenly Tom came running out . “ Run , Huck ! Run for your life ! ” They did not stop until they reached the end of the village . “ What happened , Tom ? ” “ The door wasn’t even locked , so I went in . Huck , Joe was lying on the floor , fast asleep ! There were bottles all round him . ” “ Did you see the box ? ” “ I didn’t stop to look for any box ! ” So they made a plan . Huck was going to watch the tavern every night . If the men came out with the box , he was going to follow them . Then Becky Thatcher had a picnic for all the children of the village . A big ferryboat took them three miles down the river , and they played in the woods all afternoon . In the evening somebody shouted , “ Who’s ready for the cave ? ” The children took candles and ran up the hill to McDougal’s cave . Inside , it was a huge maze of dark passages , and nobody knew all of it . The children played there for hours . Late at night the ferryboat took everybody home . Nobody noticed that two children were missing . Becky was going to stay the night at Mrs Harper’s house , so her mother did not expect her home . And Aunt Polly thought that Tom was at the Harpers ’ too .
