That night , at about eleven o’clock , Huck saw two men come quietly out of the tavern . One of them was carrying something under his arm . The box ! Huck followed them in the dark . They went up the hill , past the house of an old Welshman , Mr Jones , and on towards the big house of the Widow Douglas . She was a kind , rich lady , and she was always good to Huck . The men stopped behind some bushes near her house . Huck hid a few steps away and listened . “ Her husband was the judge here , and he was hard on me , ” said Joe . “ He had me beaten in front of the prison , with the whole town watching ! He died before I could pay him back . So now I’ll pay her back instead . I won’t kill her . But I’ll hurt her face , so she remembers me every day of her life . ” Huck did not wait to hear more . He ran down to the Welshman’s house and banged on the door . “ Let me in , quick ! I’ll tell you everything ! But please don’t tell anybody that I told you ! ” The old Welshman and his two tall sons took their guns and ran up the hill . Huck hid and waited . Soon he heard shots and a shout , and he ran away down the hill as fast as he could . Early next morning he came back to the Welshman’s door . “ The men got away , ” said the old man . “ I sneezed , and they ran . We shot at them , but we missed . ” Huck trusted this kind old man , so he told him the rest . “ The Spaniard isn’t a Spaniard , ” he said . “ It’s Joe . ” The Welshman was shocked . Soon after that , Huck became very ill with a fever . The Widow Douglas heard about it , and she looked after him herself . That same morning , Mrs Thatcher met Mrs Harper outside the church . “ Is my Becky going to sleep all day ? ” she asked with a smile . “ Your Becky ? She didn’t stay with me last night . ” Mrs Thatcher turned white . Then Aunt Polly came up to them . Tom was missing too . The other children remembered Tom and Becky in the cave , but nobody could remember seeing them come out . In a few minutes the church bells were ringing wildly , and two hundred men hurried down the river to the cave . XIII . Lost in the Cave Let us go back now to Tom and Becky . In the cave they walked with the other children at first . Then they went further along the dark passages . They wrote their names on the rock walls with the smoke of their candles . Tom wanted to show Becky new wonders , and they walked on and on . At last they came to a huge room . Thousands of bats were hanging from the high roof . The light of the candles woke them up , and they flew down at the children in a black cloud . One of them almost put out Becky’s candle with its wing . Tom took Becky’s hand , and they ran down one passage after another to escape . When the bats were gone at last , Becky noticed how quiet it was . “ Tom , I haven’t heard the others for a long time . Can you find the way back ? ”
