XIV . The Treasure Tom and Becky were very weak for days . Huck was still ill in bed , and nobody was allowed to tell him exciting news . About two weeks later , Tom went to Judge Thatcher’s house to see Becky . Somebody asked Tom , as a joke , if he wanted to go back to the cave . “ Oh , I don’t mind , ” said Tom . “ Well , you won’t get the chance , my boy , ” said the judge . “ Nobody will ever get lost in that cave again . Two weeks ago I covered the big door with iron and put three locks on it . And I’ve got the keys . ” Tom went as white as paper . “ What’s the matter , my boy ? ” “ Oh , Judge , Joe’s in the cave ! ” Boats full of men hurried to the cave , and Tom went with the judge . When they opened the door , they saw a sad sight . Joe was lying on the ground just inside the door . He had died of hunger . His knife lay near his hand . He had tried to cut through the thick door with it , but it was no use against the iron . Tom felt sorry for him , because he knew how it felt to be lost in the dark . But a great weight left his heart . He did not need to be afraid any more . A few days later , Huck was well enough to talk , and Tom went to see him . “ Huck , ” said Tom , “ the money was never in the tavern . It’s in the cave ! I saw Joe there . Will you come with me and get it ? ” “ If we don’t get lost , I will ! ” They borrowed a small boat and took food , bags , candles and a long kite string . Tom rowed down the river to the small hole among the bushes . They climbed in and followed the passages to the place where Tom had seen Joe . Tom held up his candle . “ Look , Huck ! On that big rock over there ! ” On the rock , somebody had drawn a black cross with candle smoke . “ That’s Number Two , Huck ! Under the cross ! ” They dug under the rock and soon found a small hidden hole . And in it there was the box ! “ Got it at last ! ” said Huck , running his hands through the gold coins . “ Tom , we’re rich ! ” They carried the gold out in their bags and rowed back after dark . Then they put the bags in a little wagon and covered them with old wood . On the way up the hill they met the old Welshman . “ Oh , it’s you , boys , ” he said . “ Come along , quick . Everybody’s waiting for you . ” He took them , wagon and all , to the Widow Douglas’s house . It was full of light and people : the Thatchers , the Harpers , Aunt Polly , Sid , Mary and many others . The widow sent the boys upstairs to wash and put on new clothes .
