He began to show off at once . He stood on his hands , jumped over things and walked along the top of the fence . All the time he watched the girl from the corner of his eye . Then she began to walk towards the house , and Tom felt very sad . But at the door she stopped , and she threw a flower over the fence . Tom did not run to it . He moved slowly closer , picked it up with his bare toes and hopped away round the corner . Then he put the flower inside his jacket , next to his heart . That night he lay on the grass under her window for a long time . Suddenly a servant threw a jug of water out of the window , right on top of him . Tom ran home , wet and sad . On Sunday morning Tom had to go to Sunday school . The children there learnt verses from the Bible , and they got a small ticket for every two verses . A child with enough tickets could win a Bible of their own . Tom did not learn his verses . Instead , he stood at the door and bought tickets from the other boys . He paid with the treasures from the fence . That morning Judge Thatcher , the most important man in the county , visited the Sunday school . His wife came with him , and his little daughter too . Tom’s heart jumped . It was the girl from the garden ! Then Tom walked up to the teacher with a big handful of tickets and asked for his Bible . The teacher could not believe it , but there were enough . So Tom stood next to the great judge , and the whole school looked at him with envy . The judge shook his hand . “ Two thousand verses is a great many , my boy . You know the names of the twelve disciples of Jesus , of course . Won’t you tell us the names of the first two ? ” Tom went red and looked at the floor . “ Don’t be afraid , Thomas , ” said the judge’s wife kindly . “ The names of the first two disciples were … ” “ David and Goliath ! ” said Tom . We will not tell the rest of that story . But Tom learnt the girl’s name that day . She was Becky Thatcher , the judge’s daughter , and her family had just come to live in St Petersburg . IV . Huck Finn and the Dead Cat On Monday morning , on his way to school , Tom met Huckleberry Finn . Huck was the son of the town drunkard . All the mothers in the village hated him , because he was lazy , wild and bad . He never went to school or church . In good weather he slept on doorsteps , and in wet weather he slept in empty barrels . Nobody made him wash or put on clean clothes . So all the boys admired him and wished they were like him . Tom was not allowed to play with Huck , so he played with him every time he could . Huck wore old clothes that grown men had thrown away , and his coat almost reached his heels .
