She began to cry . Tom took out his best treasure , a brass knob from the top of a fireplace , and he offered it to her . She knocked it to the floor . So Tom walked out of the school , over the hills and far away . Soon Becky began to feel sorry . She ran to the door and called , “ Tom ! Come back , Tom ! ” But there was no answer . V . Midnight in the Graveyard That night Tom lay in bed in the dark and waited . The clock struck ten , and then eleven . At last he heard a sad “ Meow ! ” under the window . He climbed out of the window and over the roof of the shed . Huck was waiting below with his dead cat . The graveyard was on a hill , about a mile and a half from the village . Grass and weeds grew over the old graves , and old wooden boards stood at their heads . The wind moved through the trees with a low , sad sound . Tom was afraid that it was the dead , unhappy in their graves . The boys found the new grave of Hoss Williams . They hid behind three big trees a few feet away and waited . Suddenly Tom took Huck’s arm . “ Sh ! Did you hear that ? ” Voices were coming from the other end of the graveyard . Then they saw a small light moving among the graves . It was coming towards them . “ It’s the devils ! ” whispered Huck . “ Three of them ! Can you pray , Tom ? ” But then Huck listened again . “ They’re people ! One of them is , anyway . That’s old Muff Potter’s voice . He’s drunk , as usual . ” “ And that one is … Oh , Huck , it’s Joe ! ” “ So it is . I’d rather have the devils ! ” Joe was a dangerous man who lived near the village , and everybody in St Petersburg was afraid of him . Mark Twain’s book gives him a nickname that people today find offensive , so in this story we simply call him Joe . The third man was young Dr Robinson . In those days doctors needed dead bodies to learn about the human body . Some of them paid men to take bodies secretly from new graves at night . Muff Potter and Joe had spades , and they began to dig . The doctor sat down against one of the trees , so close that the boys could almost touch him . At last they took the body out and tied it onto a wheelbarrow . Muff Potter cut the rope with his big knife . “ Now it’s ready , Doctor , ” he said . “ But you’ll have to give us five more dollars , or it stays here . ” “ That’s right ! ” said Joe . “ What does this mean ? ” said the doctor . “ You asked for your money first , and I paid you . ” “ Yes , and you did more than that , ” said Joe . He came up close to the doctor . “ Five years ago I came to your father’s kitchen one night and asked for something to eat . You sent me away . When I swore to pay you back , your father put me in prison . Did you think I’d forget ? Now I’ve got you , and you’re going to pay ! ”
