He held his fist in front of the doctor’s face . Suddenly the doctor hit him , and Joe fell to the ground . Potter dropped his knife . “ Hey ! Don’t you hit my friend ! ” he shouted . The next moment he was fighting the doctor , and the two men rolled over the grass . Joe jumped up . His eyes were burning . He picked up Potter’s knife and waited , like a cat . All at once the doctor pulled himself free . He picked up the heavy wooden board from Hoss Williams’s grave and hit Potter with it , and Potter fell . At the same moment Joe struck the doctor with the knife . The doctor fell across Potter’s body . Just then the clouds covered the moon , and the two terrified boys ran away into the dark . They did not see what happened next . When the moon came out again , the doctor made a small sound and then lay still . Joe took the doctor’s money . Then he put the knife in Potter’s hand and sat down to wait . A few minutes later Potter began to move . He saw the knife in his hand and dropped it in horror . “ Joe , what happened ? ” he said . “ It’s a bad business , ” said Joe . “ Why did you do it ? ” “ Me ? I didn’t do it ! ” “ That kind of talk won’t help you . You two were fighting . He hit you with the board , and then you got up with the knife . ” Potter began to shake . “ I drank too much tonight . I don’t remember anything . Oh , it’s awful , and him so young ! Joe , don’t tell anybody . Promise me . I always liked you , Joe . I always stood up for you . ” “ You’ve always been fair to me , Muff Potter , ” said Joe . “ I won’t tell . ” Potter began to cry , and then he ran away as fast as he could . Joe watched him go . “ He’s forgotten his knife , ” he said to himself . “ And he’ll be too afraid to come back for it . ” VI . The Oath The two boys did not stop running until they reached the old tannery , an empty building at the edge of the town . They fell inside and lay on the floor in the dark , breathing hard . “ Huck , ” whispered Tom at last , “ if Dr Robinson dies , somebody will hang for it . Who’s going to tell ? Us ? ” “ What are you talking about ? If we tell and they don’t hang Joe , he’ll kill us . As sure as we’re lying here . ” “ Muff Potter doesn’t know . He was lying on the ground when Joe did it . ” “ That’s true , Tom . We’ve got to keep quiet . That devil Joe would drown us like two kittens . Let’s take an oath . Let’s swear to each other that we’ll never tell . ” “ All right . But we must write it down , and we must sign it in blood . ” Tom found a clean piece of wood and took a bit of red chalk out of his pocket . By the light of the moon , he slowly wrote these words : “ Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer swear they will keep quiet about this . They wish they may drop down dead if they ever tell , and rot . ”
