VII . The Pirates Soon Becky Thatcher stopped coming to school because she was ill . Tom lost interest in everything , even in fighting . Aunt Polly was worried about him , and she gave him a new medicine called Pain - killer . It tasted like liquid fire . One day Tom gave a spoonful to Peter , the cat . Peter jumped two yards into the air , flew round the room and ran out through the open window . After that , Aunt Polly stopped the Pain - killer . When Becky came back to school , she turned her back on Tom . Tom felt that nobody in the world loved him . “ All right , ” he thought . “ I’ll go away , and then they’ll be sorry . ” On the road he met his best friend , Joe Harper , who was unhappy too . His mother had beaten him for drinking some cream , and he had never even tasted it . So the two boys decided to run away and become pirates . They asked Huck Finn to come with them , and Huck agreed at once . He had no home to leave . Three miles down the river there was a long , narrow island with thick woods . It was called Jackson’s Island , and nobody lived there . It was the perfect place for pirates . They met at midnight on the riverbank . Tom brought a big boiled ham , Joe Harper had some bacon , and Huck had a frying pan . They found a small raft by the river and took it . Tom was the captain , and he called himself the Black Avenger of the Spanish Main . Huck was Huck Finn the Red - Handed , and Joe Harper was the Terror of the Seas . At about two o’clock in the morning , they landed on the island . They lit a big fire and cooked some bacon . It was wonderful to eat in the wild woods , far from everybody . “ Isn’t this great ? ” said Joe Harper . “ It’s the life for me , ” said Tom . “ You don’t have to get up in the morning , and you don’t have to go to school or wash . ” Then they lay down by the fire and went to sleep under the stars . The next morning they swam in the river , caught fish and cooked them for breakfast . In the afternoon they heard a strange sound across the water . Boom ! They ran to the edge of the trees . The little ferryboat was on the river , full of people , and a lot of small boats were moving around it . A cloud of white smoke came from the side of the ferry , and they heard the sound again . Boom ! “ I know ! ” said Tom . “ Somebody has drowned . They’re firing the cannon over the water . People say it makes the body come up to the top . ” The boys watched for a long time . Suddenly Tom understood . “ Boys , I know who’s drowned . It’s us ! ” They felt like heroes at once . People were crying for them . It was worth it to be a pirate after all . But when night came , they grew quiet . They sat by the fire and thought about home . At last Joe Harper asked , a little shyly , what the others thought about going back one day . Tom laughed at him , and Joe Harper said no more .
