VIII . A Secret Visit Later that night , when the others were asleep , Tom got up quietly . He found two pieces of white bark from a tree and wrote something on each of them with his red chalk . He put one piece in Joe Harper’s hat , together with some of his school treasures . He kept the other . Then he crept away through the trees . He swam across to the other side of the river . The ferryboat was there with a little rowing boat behind it . Tom lay down in the bottom of the little boat , and the ferry carried him across . Nobody saw him . At about ten o’clock he reached his aunt’s house . Through the window he saw Aunt Polly , Sid and Mary in the sitting room . Joe Harper’s mother was with them . Tom opened the door very slowly , crept in and hid under Aunt Polly’s bed . “ As I was saying , ” Aunt Polly went on , “ he wasn’t bad . He was only careless and wild , like a young horse . He never meant any harm , and he had the best heart a boy ever had . ” She began to cry . “ It was just the same with my Joe , ” said Mrs Harper . “ And to think that I beat him for drinking that cream ! I forgot that I’d thrown it away myself , because it was sour . And I’ll never see him again in this world . Never , never , never ! ” Under the bed , Tom was crying too . He wanted to jump out and make his aunt happy , but he did not move . From their talk he learnt everything . People had noticed that the raft was missing , so they believed that the boys had drowned in the river . If nobody found the bodies before Sunday , there was going to be a funeral on Sunday morning . At last Mrs Harper went home . Aunt Polly prayed for Tom with so much love that his tears came again . Then she went to sleep , and Tom came out . He took the piece of bark out of his pocket and almost put it next to her candle . But then he had an idea , and he put the bark back in his pocket . He bent over and kissed her . Then he went out quietly . It was daylight when he got back to the island . He heard his friends ’ voices by the fire . “ No , Tom’s true - blue , Huck , ” Joe Harper was saying . “ He’ll come back . He won’t leave us . ” “ Well , the things in your hat are ours now , aren’t they ? ” “ Not yet , Huck . The writing says they’re ours if he isn’t back here for breakfast . ” “ And here he is ! ” cried Tom , and he walked proudly into the camp . He told them about his visit home . But he did not tell them his plan yet . After that the days on the island grew long . One morning Joe Harper said that he wanted to go home . Huck wanted to go too , and the two boys began to walk away . Then Tom ran after them and told them his secret plan . The boys shouted with joy , and nobody talked about going home after that . That afternoon Huck taught the others to smoke a pipe , and soon Tom and Joe Harper felt terrible . “ I’ve lost my knife , ” said Joe Harper weakly . “ I’ll help you find it , ” said Tom . And they went off into the woods in different directions . That night there was a great storm . The wind blew their tent away , and a big tree crashed to the ground near them . In the morning the pirates dried their wet things in the sun .
