IX . The Funeral On Sunday morning the church bell rang slowly and sadly . Nobody played in the streets , and people spoke in low voices . Becky Thatcher walked alone past the empty schoolyard . “ Oh , if only I had that brass knob again ! ” she thought . “ Now I haven’t got anything to remember him by . ” And she began to cry . The church was full . Aunt Polly , Sid , Mary and the Harper family sat at the front , all dressed in black . The minister spoke about the lost boys . He said that they were good , kind and brave , and he told many sweet stories about them . People remembered the same stories . Before , those stories had seemed naughty . Now they seemed lovely and sad . Soon everybody in the church was crying . Suddenly the church door opened quietly . The minister looked up from his handkerchief and stood without moving . Everybody turned round to look . Three boys were walking up the middle of the church . Tom was first , Joe Harper came next , and Huck came last in his old rags . They had hidden upstairs at the back of the church , and they had listened to their own funeral ! Aunt Polly , Mary and the Harpers ran to the boys and kissed them . Huck stood alone and did not know where to hide . Then Tom took his arm . “ Aunt Polly , it isn’t fair . Somebody’s got to be glad to see Huck . ” “ And so they shall ! I’m glad to see him , poor boy without a mother ! ” And Aunt Polly hugged Huck too , which made him more uncomfortable than before . Then the minister shouted , “ Praise God , from whom all blessings flow ! Sing , everybody , with all your hearts ! ” The whole church sang . Tom looked round at all the happy people . It was the proudest moment of his life . Later , at home , Aunt Polly was a little hurt . “ You could have sent me some sign , Tom , ” she said . “ You let me suffer all that time . ” “ But I did come , Aunt Polly , ” said Tom . “ I came one night and kissed you while you were asleep . I wrote you a message on a piece of bark , but I didn’t leave it . ” Aunt Polly did not believe him . Later that day , she found the bark in Tom’s old jacket . On it she read the words : “ We are not dead . We have only gone off to be pirates . ” So it was true ! She kissed the piece of bark and forgave him everything . Becky was still not speaking to Tom . But one day , in the empty schoolroom , she found the teacher’s desk open . The teacher , Mr Dobbins , kept a secret book there , and every child wanted to see it . Becky opened it and looked at a picture . At that moment Tom came in . Becky jumped , and she tore the page by accident .
