I . The Sword in the Anvil Long ago a king called Uther Pendragon ruled all of Britain . Two men helped him more than anyone else . One was Merlin , a wise old magician who could sometimes see the future . The other was Sir Ulfius , a brave knight and a great leader in war . King Uther married a gentle lady called Igraine . She was a widow , and she had two daughters from her first marriage , Margaise and Morgana le Fay . When Morgana was young , Merlin taught her magic , and she became a famous witch . After a while Uther and Igraine had a son , a big , strong baby . But one day Merlin came to the King with a serious face . “ My lord , ” he said , “ I can see that you will soon fall ill with a fever . You may die . Then your enemies will try to take this child . Let Sir Ulfius and me hide him in a safe place . ” “ This child is the hope of my whole kingdom , ” said the King calmly . “ Do what you think is best . ” So one night Merlin and Sir Ulfius carried the baby away in secret . Soon after , the King fell ill and died , just as Merlin said . Then terrible times came . The smaller kings fought each other , and wicked knights robbed travellers on the roads . For nearly eighteen years the land was full of fear . At last the Archbishop of Canterbury , the head of the Church , called Merlin to him . “ People say you are the wisest man in the world , ” he said . “ Please find us a good king . ” “ A king is coming , ” Merlin answered . “ He will be even greater than Uther , and he comes from Uther’s own family . Let me use my magic to show everyone who he is . ” So Merlin made a great block of white marble appear in front of the church in London . On top of it stood an anvil , the heavy iron block that smiths use for hammering hot metal . A sword stood deep in the anvil . Its blade was made of bright blue steel , and its handle was gold and full of jewels . Around it were these words in gold : “ Whoever pulls this sword out of the anvil is the rightful king of England . ” The Archbishop called all the great people of the land to London for Christmas . Every man had to try to pull out the sword . Soon the roads were full of kings , lords and knights . “ Perhaps none of these great men is worthy , ” Merlin told the Archbishop . “ Perhaps the worthy one is a person that nobody knows . ” Among the knights in London was Sir Ector , an honest lord with seven castles . He had two sons . The older one , Sir Kay , was a young knight who was already famous for his strength . The younger one , Arthur , was eighteen . He was Kay’s squire , a young man who served a knight and carried his spear and shield .
