I . Mr Sherlock Holmes Mr Sherlock Holmes usually got up very late in the mornings , unless he had been awake all night . But on this particular morning he was already at the breakfast table . I was standing by the fire , and I picked up a walking stick which a visitor had left in our rooms the night before . It was a fine , thick stick of heavy wood with a round head . Just under the head there was a wide band of silver . On the band someone had cut these words : “ To James Mortimer , M . R . C . S . , from his friends of the C . C . H . ” Below them was the date , 1884 . It was the kind of solid , serious stick that an old family doctor used to carry . “ Well , Watson , what do you make of it ? ” Holmes was sitting with his back to me , and I had not said a word about what I was doing . “ How did you know what I was doing ? I believe you have eyes in the back of your head . ” “ I have , at least , a well - polished silver coffee pot in front of me , ” he said . “ But tell me , what do you think of our visitor’s stick ? We missed him last night , and we have no idea why he came , so this stick has become important . Let me hear you describe the man from it . ” I tried to follow the methods of my friend as well as I could . “ I think that Dr Mortimer is a successful , older doctor . People respect him , because his friends gave him this stick as a sign of their respect . I also think that he is a country doctor who visits most of his patients on foot . The stick was a very fine one once . But the iron end is worn down , so he has clearly walked a great deal with it . And I should guess that the H stands for a local Hunt , a club of men who ride after foxes . He has probably helped some of its members as a doctor , and they gave him the stick in return . ” “ Really , Watson , you are doing very well , ” said Holmes , and he lit a cigarette . “ You may not shine yourself , but you help light to shine . Some people who are not geniuses have a great power of waking up genius in others . I owe you a great deal , my dear fellow . ” He had never said so much before , and his words gave me real pleasure . He looked at the stick carefully with a magnifying glass . “ Interesting , though simple , ” he said as he went back to his favourite corner of the sofa . “ I am afraid , my dear Watson , that most of your conclusions were wrong . When I said that you helped me , I meant that your mistakes sometimes showed me the way to the truth . The man is certainly a country doctor , and he walks a good deal . But a present to a doctor is more likely to come from a hospital than from a hunt . And when the letters C . C . stand in front of the word hospital , I think at once of Charing Cross . ”
