My heart jumped , because Barrymore had said that a boy brought food to the stranger . We hurried up to the roof , where the great telescope stood , and there , on a far hillside , was a small boy with a bundle on his shoulder . At the top of the hill he looked round him , as if he was afraid of being followed , and then he disappeared over it . As soon as I could , I left Frankland and walked across the moor to that hill . The sun was setting when I reached the top . Below me , among the rocks , there was a circle of old stone huts , and one of them still had part of a roof . With my revolver in my hand I looked in . The hut was empty , but someone had clearly been living there . There were blankets on a flat stone , the ashes of a fire , some pans , a bucket of water and many empty tins . On a stone in the middle lay the cloth bundle which the boy had carried , with bread and tins of food in it . Under it there was a sheet of paper with a few words written in pencil : “ Dr Watson has gone to Coombe Tracey . ” So it was me , and not Sir Henry , whom this secret man was watching . The boy had followed me , and this was his report . Was the man our enemy , or was he by chance our guardian angel ? I decided not to leave the hut until I knew . Outside , the sun was going down in red and gold . I sat in a dark corner of the hut and waited . At last I heard a boot strike a stone far away , then another , coming nearer and nearer . I held my revolver ready . The steps stopped for a long moment . Then they came on again , and a shadow fell across the doorway . “ It is a lovely evening , my dear Watson , ” said a voice I knew well . “ I really think that you will be more comfortable outside than in . ” X . Death on the Moor “ Holmes ! ” I cried . “ Holmes ! ” “ Come out , ” he said , “ and please be careful with the revolver . ” He was sitting on a stone outside , and his grey eyes were bright with amusement . He was thin and brown from the sun , but his chin was as smooth and his shirt as clean as if he were in Baker Street . “ I have never been so glad to see anyone in my life , ” I said , and I shook his hand . “ Or so surprised , eh ? If you want to hide from me , Watson , you must change your tobacco shop . When I see the end of a cigarette marked Bradley , Oxford Street , I know that my friend Watson is near . ” “ But I thought you were in Baker Street , working on that case of blackmail . ” “ That was what I wanted you to think . ” “ So you use me , and yet you do not trust me ! ” I cried . “ I think I deserve better than that , Holmes . ”
