The lady jumped up from her chair . “ His wife ! ” she cried . “ He is not a married man . ” Holmes took some papers out of his pocket . “ Here is a photograph of the couple which was taken in York four years ago . It says ‘ Mr and Mrs Vandeleur ’ on the back , but you will recognise him easily , and her too , if you have seen her . At that time they owned a private school , and here are the descriptions of three people who knew them . ” She looked at the papers , and then she looked up at us with the hard face of a desperate woman . “ Mr Holmes , ” she said , “ this man promised to marry me if I could get a divorce from my husband . He has lied to me in every possible way . Why should I protect him now ? Ask me anything you like . But I swear that when I wrote that letter , I never dreamed of any harm to the old gentleman , who had been my kindest friend . ” “ I believe you , madam , ” said Holmes . “ Stapleton told you to send the letter , did he not ? ” “ He told me what to write . He said that Sir Charles would give me money for the costs of my divorce . ” “ And after you had sent it , he persuaded you not to go ? ” “ He said that it would hurt his pride if another man paid for such a thing . He said that people would suspect me if the facts came out . ” “ I think you have been lucky , madam , ” said Holmes . “ For some months you have been walking very near the edge of a cliff . ” At the station the London train came in , and a small , tough man like a bulldog jumped out of a first - class carriage . It was Lestrade . He looked at Holmes with great respect . “ Anything good ? ” he asked . “ The biggest thing for years , ” said Holmes . “ We have two hours before we need to start . Let us have some dinner , and then we will give you a breath of the night air of Dartmoor . ” XII . We left the carriage near the gates of the Hall and walked on towards Merripit House . “ Are you armed , Lestrade ? ” asked Holmes . The little detective smiled . “ As long as I have my trousers , I have a back pocket , and as long as I have my back pocket , I have something in it . But you’re very quiet about this business , Mr Holmes . What’s the game now ? ” “ A waiting game . ”
