She laughed and clapped her hands . “ He may find his way in , but never out . We put sticks in the mud together , he and I , to mark the path . How can he see them tonight ? ” We could do nothing until the fog had lifted , so Holmes and I took Sir Henry back to the Hall . He took the truth about the woman he loved bravely , but the shock had broken his nerves , and by morning he had a high fever . Later he and Dr Mortimer would travel round the world together before he was the strong , cheerful man he had been before . The next morning Mrs Stapleton showed us where the path began , and we followed the little sticks across the stinking mud . Only once did we see a sign that someone had passed that way . Something dark was sticking out of the grass . Holmes sank up to his waist when he reached for it . It was an old black boot with “ Meyers , Toronto ” printed inside it . “ It is Sir Henry’s missing boot , ” said Holmes . “ Stapleton used it to set the hound on his track , and he threw it away here as he ran . ” But we never learned more than that . There were no footprints in the mud , and on the firm ground beyond it we found no sign of him either . Somewhere in the heart of the great Grimpen Mire , deep in the dark mud , that cold and cruel man is buried for ever . On the island we found the old mine and the ruined huts of the miners . In one of them there was a chain and a pile of bones , among them the skeleton of a dog with curly brown hair . “ A curly - haired spaniel , ” said Holmes . “ Poor Mortimer will never see his pet again . And here is the shining paint which he put on the hound . He could hide his hound , but he could not hide its voice , and so the farmers heard those cries . We have never helped to catch a more dangerous man , Watson , than the one who is lying out there . ” XIII . Looking Back It was the end of November . Holmes and I were sitting on a cold , foggy night on each side of a bright fire in Baker Street . Sir Henry and Dr Mortimer had visited us that afternoon before their long journey , so we began to talk about the case . “ To us it all seemed very complex , ” said Holmes , “ because at the start we did not know the man’s reasons . Since then I have had two long talks with Mrs Stapleton , and the case is now completely clear . “ The family portrait did not lie . The man who called himself Stapleton really was a Baskerville . He was the son of Rodger , the youngest brother of Sir Charles , who had run away to South America . Everyone believed that Rodger had died unmarried , but in fact he had one son . This son married Beryl Garcia , a beauty from Costa Rica . He stole a large sum of public money and came to England under the name of Vandeleur . He started a school in Yorkshire , but it ended in disgrace . So the Vandeleurs became the Stapletons and moved to Devon .
