“ I am so glad , ” he said . “ I would not lose that stick for the world . Friends at the hospital gave it to me when I got married and left . ” “ Then we were not so far wrong , after all , ” said Holmes . “ And now , Dr Mortimer , what is the problem which has brought you to me ? ” Our visitor looked at Holmes with great interest . “ I must confess , Mr Holmes , that I have long wanted to see your skull . A cast of it would be a fine thing for any museum . But that is not why I have come . I have come because I have a very serious and very strange problem . ” II . The Curse of the Baskervilles “ I have an old paper in my pocket , ” said Dr Mortimer . “ I noticed it when you came into the room , ” said Holmes . “ Early eighteenth century , unless it is false . ” “ The exact date is 1742 . ” Dr Mortimer took it out of his coat . “ Sir Charles Baskerville , who died suddenly three months ago , gave me this family paper . I was his friend as well as his doctor . He was a practical man , and yet he took it very seriously . It tells an old family legend . May I read it to you ? ” Holmes leaned back and closed his eyes , and Dr Mortimer read the story in a high , cracking voice . I will tell it here in simpler words . About a hundred years before the paper was written , Baskerville Hall belonged to a man named Hugo Baskerville . He was a wild and cruel man , and his evil name was known all over the West Country . Hugo fell in love with the daughter of a farmer who lived near the Hall . But the girl was good and sensible , and she always kept away from him because she was afraid of him . One autumn day the girl’s father and brothers were away . Hugo and five or six of his wild friends rode down to the farm and carried her off to the Hall . They locked her in a room upstairs and sat down to drink , as they did every night . The poor girl was almost mad with fear when she heard the shouting and the terrible words from below . At last she did something that even a brave man might not have done . She climbed out of the window and down the ivy which covered the south wall , and she ran home across the moor . A little later Hugo went upstairs with food for his prisoner and found the room empty . He ran down into the dining hall like a man with a devil inside him . He jumped onto the great table and shouted that he would give his body and soul to the powers of evil if he could only catch the girl . One of his friends cried out that they should put the dogs on her trail . So Hugo gave the hounds a cloth that belonged to the girl and rode off after her across the moor .
