III . The Problem I must confess that I felt a cold shiver at these words . The doctor himself was deeply moved , and Holmes leaned forward with a hard , bright look in his eyes . “ You saw this ? ” “ As clearly as I see you . The marks were about twenty yards from the body , and nobody else paid any attention to them . I do not suppose that I would have noticed them myself if I had not known the legend . ” “ There are many sheepdogs on the moor ? ” “ No doubt , but this was no sheepdog . It was enormous , though it had not gone near the body . ” “ What is the alley like ? ” “ There are two lines of old yew hedge , twelve feet high , which nobody could get through . The path in the middle has a strip of grass on each side . The only way into it from the moor is through the small gate . ” “ Now , tell me , Dr Mortimer , and this is important . Were the marks which you saw on the path , and on the same side as the gate ? ” “ They were on the edge of the path , on the same side as the gate . No marks could show on the grass . ” “ And what marks did you see by the gate ? ” “ None in particular . The gate is only four feet high , so anyone could climb over it . Sir Charles had stood there for five or ten minutes , because the ash had dropped twice from his cigar . His own marks were all over that small piece of ground . ” Holmes struck his knee with his hand in an impatient way . “ If only I had been there ! ” he cried . “ I might have read so much on that ground , and now the rain has spoiled it . Why did you not call me in ? ” “ There are some things which even the best detective cannot deal with , Mr Holmes . Since the tragedy I have heard about several things which are hard to explain . Before Sir Charles died , three people saw a creature on the moor which matches the hound of the legend . It was huge , and it seemed to shine with a ghostly light . People here are terrified , and only a very brave man will cross the moor at night . ” “ And you , a man of science , believe that it is supernatural ? ” “ I do not know what to believe . ” Holmes shrugged his shoulders . “ Until now I have done my work only in this world . But if you hold these views , why have you come to me at all ? ”
