“ Running from what ? ” “ That is our problem . And he was mad with fear , or he would have run towards the house , not away from it . Then why was he waiting at the gate ? He was old and ill , the night was cold and wet , and he always avoided the moor . Yet that night , the night before he was going to London , he waited by the gate to the moor for five or ten minutes . I think that he was waiting for someone . The thing is beginning to take shape , Watson . Now , would you hand me my violin ? We will think no more about this business until we have met Sir Henry Baskerville in the morning . ” IV . Sir Henry Baskerville The clock had just struck ten the next morning when Dr Mortimer came up the stairs , followed by the young baronet . Sir Henry was a small , dark - eyed man of about thirty , strongly built , with thick black eyebrows and a strong face . He wore a reddish suit of country cloth , and he had the brown skin of a man who lives in the open air . “ I would have come to you this morning even without my friend here , Mr Holmes , ” he said . “ I hear that you think out little puzzles , and I had one this morning which I cannot think out myself . It was this letter , if you can call it a letter . ” He put an envelope on the table . The address , “ Sir Henry Baskerville , Northumberland Hotel ” , was printed in rough capital letters , and it had been posted in Charing Cross the evening before . Nobody could have known that he was staying there . Holmes took out a half sheet of paper , folded into four , and opened it on the table . Someone had made a sentence out of printed words cut from a newspaper : “ As you value your life or your reason keep away from the moor . ” Only the word “ moor ” was written by hand , in ink . “ Now , Mr Holmes , ” said Sir Henry , “ perhaps you will tell me what in thunder that means , and who takes such an interest in my business ? ” “ You shall know all that we know before you leave this room , Sir Henry . But first , Watson , have you got yesterday’s Times ? ” I gave him the newspaper , and he looked quickly up and down the page with the main articles . Then he read out a long , dull sentence from an article about free trade . It contained the words you , your , life , reason , value , keep away and from the . “ By thunder , you’re right ! ” cried Sir Henry . “ The words were cut out of that very article ! ” “ How could you know which paper it was , and even which article ? ” asked Dr Mortimer . “ I suppose , Doctor , that you can tell one kind of skull from another at a glance ? Well , print is my special subject . The sender used short nail scissors , because he had to cut twice to get ‘ keep away ’ . He wrote ‘ moor ’ by hand because he could not find that word in print . ”
