At that moment I saw a thick black beard and a pair of sharp eyes looking at us through the side window . Then the cab flew off down Regent Street . Holmes looked round for another cab , but there was no empty one , and soon the first one was out of sight . “ What bad luck , and what bad management too ! ” said Holmes bitterly . “ Watson , if you are an honest man , you will write this down as well as my successes ! Someone has been following Sir Henry closely since he came to London . We are dealing with a clever man . He followed them in a cab , so that he could go slowly behind them or drive quickly past them . But that has one weakness . ” “ It puts him in the power of the cab driver . ” “ Exactly , and I got the number of the cab : 2704 . Could you swear to that man’s face ? ” “ Only to the beard . ” “ So could I , and so I think it was probably a false one . ” Holmes went into a messenger office and asked for a boy of fourteen named Cartwright , who had a bright , clever face . “ Here are the names of twenty - three hotels near Charing Cross , ” said Holmes . “ You will visit each one , give the porter a shilling and ask to see yesterday’s waste paper . Say that an important telegram has been lost . But what you are really looking for is the middle page of the Times , with some holes cut in it . Send me a report by telegram before evening . And now , Watson , we must find out who drove cab number 2704 . ” V . Three Broken Threads For the next two hours Holmes did not say a word about the case . He talked only about art until we reached Sir Henry’s hotel . There he looked at the hotel book and saw that only two guests had arrived after Sir Henry . The porter knew them both well . “ So the people who are watching our friend are not staying in his hotel , ” Holmes said quietly as we went upstairs . “ They want to watch him , but they are just as anxious that he should not see them . ” At the top of the stairs we met Sir Henry himself . His face was red with anger , and he held an old , dusty boot in his hand . “ They seem to think they can play games with me in this hotel ! ” he cried . “ Last night they took one of my new brown boots , and today they have taken one of my old black ones ! It seems the maddest , strangest thing that ever happened to me . ” “ The strangest , perhaps , ” said Holmes thoughtfully . “ Your case is very complex , Sir Henry . But we hold several threads in our hands , and one of them will lead us to the truth . ” After lunch Sir Henry said that he would go to the Hall at the end of the week . “ I think that is wise , ” said Holmes . “ You are being followed in London , and in a city of millions it is hard to find out who these people are . Dr Mortimer , did you know that someone followed you from my house this morning ? Is there anyone near you on Dartmoor with a full black beard ? ”
