VI . Baskerville Hall On Saturday Holmes drove with me to the station and gave me his last advice . “ I will not put theories into your head , Watson , ” he said . “ Just send me the facts , as fully as you can , and leave the theories to me . Watch the people around Sir Henry . Keep the Barrymores . There is a groom at the Hall , and there are two farmers on the moor . There is our friend Dr Mortimer , whom I believe to be completely honest , and his wife , of whom we know nothing . There is this man Stapleton , and his sister , who is said to be a pretty young lady . There is Mr Frankland of Lafter Hall . These are the people you must study . You have your revolver ? ” “ Yes , I thought it was better to take it . ” “ Keep it near you night and day . ” Sir Henry and Dr Mortimer were waiting for us on the platform . As the train began to move , Holmes told Sir Henry never to cross the moor in the dark hours . When I looked back , I saw his tall figure standing on the platform and watching us . On the train Sir Henry looked out of the window and cried out with delight when he saw the scenery of Devon . He had left it as a boy and had never seen the Hall . “ There is your first sight of the moor , ” said Dr Mortimer , and he pointed out of the window . Far away , beyond the fields and the woods , rose a long , grey , sad hill with a strange broken top , like a landscape in a dream . Sir Henry sat and stared at it for a long time without a word . At a small country station a carriage was waiting for us . To my surprise , two soldiers with rifles were standing by the gate and watching us carefully . Our driver , a hard - faced little man called Perkins , drove us quickly along the white road . On both sides there were green fields and old houses among the trees . But behind this peaceful , sunny country there always rose the long , dark line of the moor against the evening sky . Yellow leaves covered the road and fell on us as we passed . Suddenly Dr Mortimer cried out . On a hill in front of us a soldier sat on his horse with his rifle ready , watching the road . “ What is this , Perkins ? ” asked Dr Mortimer . “ A prisoner has escaped from Princetown , sir . He has been out for three days now . The guards are watching every road and every station , but they have seen nothing of him yet . The farmers here don’t like it at all . It’s Selden , the man who killed people in Notting Hill . ” The man had not been hanged only because the court had doubts about his sanity . As we came over a hill , the whole wide moor lay in front of us . A cold wind blew down from it and made us shiver . Somewhere out there this terrible man was hiding like a wild animal in a hole , full of hatred for the world . Even Sir Henry fell silent and pulled his coat more tightly around him . The road grew wilder and emptier . Then we looked down into a hollow full of small , twisted trees , and above them we saw two high , narrow towers . “ Baskerville Hall , ” said the driver .
