“ Well , Jack , you are very hot . I was just telling Sir Henry that he is rather late to see the beauty of the moor . ” “ No , no , ” I said . “ I am only his friend . My name is Dr Watson . ” Her face turned red with annoyance , and Stapleton’s small , light eyes looked quickly from her to me . They took me to Merripit House , a lonely farmhouse which had been made into a comfortable home . Stapleton told me that he had once owned a school in the north of England . But three boys had died there of an illness , and the school had failed . Now he spent his time studying plants and insects , and his sister loved nature as much as he did . He invited me to see his collection of butterflies and moths , but I wanted to get back to Sir Henry . I had not gone far along the path when I saw Miss Stapleton sitting on a rock beside it . She had run all the way by a shorter path . “ I made a stupid mistake , Dr Watson , because I thought you were Sir Henry , ” she said . “ Please forget my words . My brother and I were very shocked by Sir Charles’s death , and when a new Baskerville came to live here , I felt that he should be warned . ” “ Then why did you not want your brother to hear you ? ” “ My brother wants someone to live at the Hall , because it is good for the poor people of the moor . He would be very angry if he knew I had said anything to send Sir Henry away . I must go now , or he will notice that I am missing . Goodbye ! ” VIII . The Light upon the Moor From this point I will tell the story mostly as I told it then , in my reports to Sherlock Holmes in London . In the first days nothing much happened . People believed that the escaped prisoner had left the moor , and the lonely farmers began to sleep better . Stapleton showed us the two great old stones where the wicked Hugo had died , and then we had lunch at Merripit House . There Sir Henry met Miss Stapleton . From the first moment he was strongly attracted to her , and I believe that she liked him too . One would think that Stapleton would be glad of such a match for his sister . Yet he looked angry when Sir Henry paid her attention , and he never left them alone together . I also met old Mr Frankland of Lafter Hall , a red - faced man who loved to go to court against everybody . He had a fine telescope on his roof , and he watched the moor with it all day . Sir Henry asked Barrymore about Holmes’s telegram , and the butler said that his wife had brought it up to him . The questions upset him , so Sir Henry gave him a large part of his old clothes , because his new London clothes had now arrived .
