IX . The Man on the Tor The next morning Barrymore asked to speak to Sir Henry . He thought it was unfair that we had hunted his wife’s brother after she had told us the secret herself . “ He will not trouble anyone again , sir , ” he said . “ In a few days he will be on a ship to South America . For God’s sake , sir , don’t tell the police that he is still on the moor . ” Sir Henry looked at me , I shrugged my shoulders , and he told the butler that he could go . But Barrymore turned back at the door . “ You have been so kind to us , sir , that I want to tell you something in return . I know why Sir Charles was at the gate at that hour . He was waiting to meet a woman . I don’t know her name , but her initials were L . L . That morning your uncle had only one letter , so I noticed it . It came from Coombe Tracey , and the address was in a woman’s writing . A few weeks ago my wife was cleaning his study , and in the fireplace she found the ashes of a burned letter . Only the end of one page could still be read . It said : ‘ Please , please , as you are a gentleman , burn this letter , and be at the gate by ten o’clock . ’ It was signed L . L . We said nothing before , sir , because we were fond of Sir Charles , and it is wise to go carefully when there is a lady in the case . ” I sent a report to Holmes at once . That evening Dr Mortimer gave me a lift home in his little carriage . He was very sad , because his spaniel had run off onto the moor and had never come back . I thought of the pony in the Grimpen Mire , and I did not believe that he would see his dog again . When I asked him if he knew any woman with the initials L . L . , he thought for a few minutes . “ There is Laura Lyons in Coombe Tracey , ” he said . “ She is Frankland’s daughter . She married an artist who later left her , and her father will have nothing to do with her . Several people here helped her to start a small typing business , and Stapleton and Sir Charles were two of them . ” Later Barrymore brought me my coffee , and I asked him if Selden had gone .
