I . The Ship from Smyrna On the twenty - fourth of February 1815 , a large ship called the Pharaon sailed slowly into the old port of Marseilles . She had come from Smyrna , Trieste and Naples , and as soon as people saw her sails , a crowd gathered on the harbour wall to watch her arrive . The Pharaon belonged to Monsieur Morrel , a kind and honest shipowner , and everyone in the town knew her . A young man was standing on the deck and giving orders to the sailors . He was tall and slim , with dark eyes and black hair , and he moved with the quiet calm of someone who had lived at sea since he was a child . His name was Edmond Dantès , and he was only nineteen years old . Monsieur Morrel was too impatient to wait on shore , so he took a small boat and came out to the ship himself . “ What has happened , Dantès ? ” he called . “ Why do you look so serious ? ” “ A great misfortune , sir , ” the young man answered . “ We have lost our good Captain Leclere . He caught a fever near Naples and died three days later , and we buried him at sea . ” Morrel was silent for a moment . Then he asked about the cargo , and Dantès told him that every bale was safe . While they were talking , another man came up to them . This was Danglars , the ship’s accountant , a man of about twenty - five with a polite smile and cold eyes , whom the sailors did not like . “ A sad loss , sir , ” Danglars said to Morrel . “ But Dantès took the captain’s place very quickly . He even stopped for a day and a half at the island of Elba , although we had no business there . ” Morrel turned to Dantès with surprise , and the young man explained what had happened . Before he died , the captain had given him a small packet for the Grand Marshal , who lived on Elba with the Emperor Napoleon . Everyone knew that Napoleon had been sent to that island after he had lost his throne . Dantès had delivered the packet as he had promised , and on Elba someone had given him a letter to carry to a gentleman in Paris . “ You did well to obey your captain , ” Morrel said kindly , and then he lowered his voice . “ Now tell me , Edmond , would you like to be captain of the Pharaon yourself ? ” The young man’s face lit up with joy . Danglars , who was standing nearby , said nothing , but his eyes grew darker . As soon as he was free , Dantès ran to a small house in the Allées de Meilhan , where his old father lived alone . While his son was away , the old man had paid a debt of a hundred and forty francs to their neighbour Caderousse , a tailor who liked wine more than work , and since then he had been living on almost nothing . “ Why did you not tell anyone ? ” Edmond asked , and he put his gold coins on the table . “ Here , Father , take this . Tomorrow you will have everything you need , and soon I shall be a captain with a good salary ! ”
