Maya wants to take a small green plant to her brother . He lives on the other side of London , and he is waiting at the station near his flat . The sky is grey , and the plant is too heavy for a long walk in the rain . Maya does not call a taxi . She already has a card for the bus and the Underground , and she wants to learn this way herself . She walks to the bus stop at the end of her street . A few people stand under the shelter . Maya holds the plant with both hands and reads the sign . The bus she needs stops here . When it comes , the doors open and she steps on . She taps her card , and the machine accepts it . There is one free seat by the window , so she sits and rests the plant on her knees . The bus moves through wet streets . Maya watches the names of the stops on the screen . She does not want to miss hers . Near the door she sees a red button on a pole . At the stop before hers , a man presses it . A bell sounds , and the bus slows down . When her stop is next , she presses the button too . Maya says thank you and gets off with the plant held close . The station is across the road . She walks down to the Underground . People in London also call it the Tube . Much of it runs under the ground , like a train below the streets . Maya stops at a big map on the wall . The lines have different colours . She finds the colour she needs and follows the signs . She goes through a gate with her card and comes out onto a platform . A board shows the next train . When it arrives , she lets other people get off first . Then she steps in and stands near the door . The doors close . Above them a list shows the stations on the way , and she can read the name of her brother's station . The windows go dark while the train runs under the street . A woman with a red bag stands beside her . Maya asks , " Does this train stop at my station ? " The woman nods and points at the list . At the right stop Maya gets off , climbs the stairs , and comes out into the light . Her brother is by the gate . He takes the plant and laughs , because one leaf is bent from the ride . Maya laughs too . She wanted to bring him something green and living , and the plant is here . She knows the button , the coloured map , and the platform now . That is enough for today .
