Nia stood outside the museum with the ticket window on her left and a food stall on her right . She wanted a full day in the city . She did not have money for the museum , a restaurant meal , and the train home . She had known that in the hostel . Knowing it here , with warm bread in the air , was harder . The poster of paintings pulled at her . A trip , she thought , should include something you can describe later . Then she sorted the day into choices , not into a speech about saving money . Museum now , and a hungry evening . Or no museum , food she could carry , and the coins for the train left untouched . The train was not optional . The paintings were . She stepped away from the window . At the market down the street she pointed at a loaf and a bag of small oranges . The seller said a price . Nia asked him to repeat it , because she did not want to nod at a number she had not really heard . She could pay it and still keep the train fare in her other pocket . She did . A bench in the square faced the museum , so the building was only a roof and a door she was not going through . Nia broke the loaf and ate it slowly . It was plain , still warm , and enough . An orange left her fingers sticky . This was not the day she had described to her sister . It was a day she could finish without borrowing anything . A group followed a guide toward the door . Nia watched them go in . For a moment she stood up , then sat again . Going in would spend the pocket she had promised herself she would not touch . She stayed on the bench until the loaf was gone , then walked the long way to the station , through streets she would have missed indoors . At the platform she checked the coins once . They were there . Her feet hurt , and her bag was light . The afternoon had cost her a loaf and some oranges . She was on her way home with the fare she had protected , which was the plan that mattered .
