Maya wanted one quiet hour at her desk before the office filled with voices . An email from yesterday was still waiting , and she wanted to answer it while the room was still empty . She left the flat without breakfast . The bus would not wait , and the bread was still in the bag . On the stairs she remembered the old meaning of the word . Breakfast is break and fast : the meal that ends a night without food . This morning she broke nothing . She locked the door and ran . The bus came full . It was the rush hour , the busy time when many people are going to work . They stood close , with bags against their knees . Maya held the rail and watched the streets in the early light . She did not open her phone . The email could wait until she had a chair and a quiet screen . She arrived , and the office was not the quiet empty room she wanted . The light over Anna's desk was already on . Anna liked the early room , and she was often there before anyone else . A plate sat on Maya's desk . There was toast on it , and a cup of coffee that was still warm . " You left without eating , " Anna said . " I made extra . " Maya wanted to work fast and alone . The toast made her stop . She put her bag down . She did not open the email . She sat , broke the toast with her fingers , and ate while it was still warm . The coffee was strong and a little sweet . Anna did not wait for a long speech . She was already reading her own screen , with one hand around her cup . Maya took a small note from the drawer , wrote " Thank you " on it , and stuck it to the side of Anna's screen . Anna saw it , smiled , and went back to her page . The email was still there when the cup was empty . Maya opened it then . Crumbs sat on her sleeve , and Anna was still the only other person in the room . She typed an answer that was slower than the one in her head on the bus . The small note on Anna's screen did not move .
