Nadia wanted a choice before people left the room . Two covers were in her bag , one grey and one blue . She still had to carry one of them downstairs , and she did not want to choose alone . She came in while the chairs were still moving . She wanted to speak first . Mr Okonkwo was already at the head of the table , so she sat at the side and put the bag on her lap . The covers made a flat shape against her knees . She kept her hands there . Okonkwo spoke first . He asked for updates . Tomas talked about a late van . The driver called from the road , and the boxes were not close yet . A woman from the front desk talked about labels that were still missing . She said nothing could go out without a name on it . Nadia listened . Her question was only a choice of colour , and the room was busy with problems that could stop the work . She almost spoke when the labels were finished . She opened her mouth , then closed it . Those labels mattered today . The covers could wait one more minute . She told herself that , and she believed it until Okonkwo looked at the clock . " Anything else ? " he asked . Chairs moved . Tomas closed his notebook and put his pen in his pocket . Nadia felt people leaving while her bag was still shut . If she said nothing now , both covers would go home with her . She put both covers on the table , side by side . " We need one of these today , " she said . " Grey or blue . Please choose before we leave . " For a moment nobody stood . Tomas picked up the blue cover and held it to the window . " I can see every finger mark on this one . " Okonkwo took the grey cover . He turned it once . The light on it was soft , and his fingers did not show . " Grey , " he said . " Send the grey one . " Nadia wrote two words on her pad : send grey . She slid the blue cover into the bag . The grey one stayed in her hand . When people stood , she stood with them , the cover held flat so it would not bend .
