The lift was stuck between floors , and the light above the doors was red . Nobody was inside . Paul , the night manager , already had the repair company on the line . Noor stood at the desk with a key in her palm . Outside , a guest was coming up the steps , and a suitcase knocked on each one . She wanted that guest in a room before the lift became the whole evening . The only ready room was on the ground floor , by the garden . Paul had been holding it for a late booking . Noor had taken that call herself . The caller had said they might not come . Paul kept the room locked in his book anyway . " Tell them to wait in the lobby , " he said , the phone still at his ear . " We do not give away a held room because a lift is slow . " " The lift is not slow , " Noor said . " It is stuck . And that booking may never walk in . " Paul turned his shoulder to her and kept talking to the repair company . He used his calm voice , the one that made a problem sound small . Noor felt the key against her skin . She had taken it from the hook before she was sure she would use it . The door opened . The guest came in with the suitcase and stopped when he saw the red light . He set the case down as if the steps had been enough for one night . Noor did not look at Paul . She looked at the guest . " The lift is stuck , " she said . " I can give you the room by the garden . It is on this floor . Or you can wait . " The guest looked at the suitcase , then at the red light . " This floor , " he said . Paul stopped . The repair company was still a thin voice in the phone . He put it down without saying goodbye . For a moment Noor thought he would take the key and put it back on the hook . His eyes went to the book , where the late booking still had a line . " Garden room , " he said . " Note it . If those people still come , I will deal with them . Do not wait for me to like it . " Noor wrote one line in the book . She did not add anything else . The guest followed her down the short corridor , and the suitcase was quiet on the flat floor . Behind her , Paul picked the phone up again . This time he sounded like a man reporting a stuck lift , not a man saving a rule . The red light did not change . Noor opened the garden room and let the guest go in ahead of her .
