Ruth wanted the last line of the slide gone before the board sat down . She had helped Malik make it smooth , and she did not trust him to leave it dead . He had the deck open in the empty room . Everything above that line was usable . There was work they could already see . There was a client who had gone quiet . There was a supplier who might slip . The last line swept those into one destination , smooth enough to settle a table . If she left the doubt in his mouth , he would offer it as manners , and if a director frowned , he would hand the destination back as comfort . She stood where the screen faced the chairs they had not sat in yet . " Take it off , " she said . " And don't explain the gap yourself . I will . If you explain it , you will apologize , and an apology is how that number finds its way back in . " Malik looked at the line as if it were a railing over a drop . " They will ask me for a figure . I am the one they look at when the room wants to feel finished . " " Then let them look , and wait , " Ruth said . " I will say what we can see and where it stops . The quiet client is not a story we get to complete for them . The supplier is not a date we get to promise . If they still want a figure after that , the figure is their instruction , not our forecast . I am not going to invent a landing so the hour stays pleasant . " His hands hovered over the keys , already shaping a softer substitute , something that would sound cautious and still point at the same place . Ruth set her palm on the trackpad . Not a speech . A stop . " Leave it unfinished , " she said . He deleted the line . He sat back . " You start , " he said . " If I open , I will try to save us . " The handle of the door moved . Ruth did not practice a caveat under her breath . She turned the laptop so the empty end of the slide faced the chairs .
