The ceiling lights died just after Ruth had checked the back room . The clinic did not go quiet . Someone in the waiting chairs laughed , then stopped . Against the wall , the small fridge kept its low hum , and Ruth listened to it the way you listen when you are afraid a sound will end . That fridge was the thing she had to protect . It held medicines that needed the cold . She was not going to open the door just to look brave . She knew enough without that . If the hum stopped and stayed stopped , the afternoon would turn into a problem . The grid had failed . The panels on the roof were the other way to feed a plug . Jon came in from the desk with the kettle already in his hands . He was walking toward the battery box by the door . " The panels are up there , " he said . " We can have tea , and we can run the fan . People are hot , and they are waiting . " Ruth put her hand on the socket before he reached it . The light on the battery was steady . It was not the bright look of fresh charge . At noon the sun had been on the panels , and the box had taken that electricity in . Now a thick cloud covered the roof . Panels turn sunlight into electricity . Under a cloud like that , they make much less . What the box still held was mostly from the morning , and there was only so much of it left . " The fridge , " she said . " Not the kettle . Not the fan . Not until the lights come back . " " It is a whole roof , " Jon said . " One kettle will not matter . " " It matters if the cloud stays and we spend the battery on heat we do not need . " She moved the fridge plug into the battery socket and left the other sockets dark . The hum came back , smaller than the old lights , but there . Jon set the kettle on the counter . He did not start a second argument . In the waiting room , somebody opened a window . Ruth stayed near the fridge . Outside , the cloud did not thin . A man in the chairs fanned himself with a folded paper . The room was dim , and the work got slower . Ruth checked the door of the fridge with the back of her hand and left it shut . When the ceiling lights flickered and held , the hum was still going . Ruth moved the fridge plug back to the wall . Jon filled the kettle then , from the grid , and the click of it was an ordinary sound .
