Marcus wanted Mrs . Quinn to take the bag . She had come for it , and then she had stayed on the customer side of the counter with her hands in her coat , watching a video with the sound almost off . The caption promised tiny machines that would swim to the trouble and deal with it . Her face had the careful look of a person about to leave a thing behind . The bag sat between them in a cold sleeve , the outside beaded with water from the warm shop . A return meant paperwork , and a conversation he had already started to lose . " They are not machines , " he said , and heard how thin it was . He reached for something brighter . " They are very small , and they know where to go . " Helen came out of the back room with a pen behind her ear and caught the second sentence . She did not raise her voice . She turned the phone face down , the way you move a cup back from the edge of a table . " Not that story , " she said . " Mrs . Quinn , the drug in this bag sits inside a very small bubble made from fats . Cell membranes are built from that sort of material . That is the unusual part . Nobody steers it . I will not tell you it goes looking , because that promise is not on the leaflet , and I do not sell promises that are not on the leaflet . The leaflet says the fridge . You take it home , you put it straight in the fridge , and you follow the rest of the page . If the page is not enough , you ring this shop . You do not ring a video . " Mrs . Quinn looked at the bag , not at Marcus . " And if the fridge is wrong ? " " Then you ring us before you take any , " Helen said . " We would rather have the call than a guess . " The impressive sentence died behind Marcus's teeth . He had wanted Mrs . Quinn to feel brave . She picked up the cold bag in both hands , holding it close so the walk would not warm it . She thanked Helen . She did not thank the phone . At the door she checked that the sleeve was shut , and then she stepped out into the street with the bag still cold against her coat .
