Mara Voss put two printouts on the desk and kept her hands on them , as if they might be swapped back . Her twin , Helen , was named on one . Hers was on the other . She had come across the city because she wanted Nina Adeyemi to say the obvious thing out loud . " They match , " Mara said . " Every line they showed me matches . So tell me which of us the lab confused , or tell me we are the same case . I did not come here for a riddle . " Nina had read the pages before the appointment . The letters did match . That was not a trick , and it was not the answer Mara was asking for . Nina turned both sheets the same way up . " Nobody confused you , " she said . " Identical twins can carry the same DNA sequence . Yours does match hers , as far as this report goes . Sequence is the text . It is not the whole of how a gene is used . " Mara's mouth tightened . " If the text is the same , the ending is the same . That is what same means . " " It is what same means for the letters , " Nina said . " A gene can be read readily or barely read , and the letters can sit there either way . One way that happens is methylation : a small chemical mark on the DNA that does not edit a single letter and can still change how ready that stretch is to be read . Those marks are not the sequence . They can differ between twins who match letter for letter . I am not telling you that yours and Helen's do differ . I have not measured that . I am telling you this printout cannot see it . " Mara looked at the two names again . " So you will not say I am safe , and you will not say I am next . " " I will not say either , " Nina said . " Both of those sentences would pretend the sequence had already chosen . It has not . Anyone who tells you a life event wrote a new gene into you is changing the subject . The sequence is still the sequence . What I can say , and all I can say from these pages , is that they do not decide the question you carried in . " The radiator knocked once . Mara stacked Helen's page on her own and aligned the corners . She put the folder under her arm and did not ask Nina to look again .
